Job Description
Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service and Smithsonian Affiliations (SITES|SA). SITES|SA's mission is to catalyze public engagement and spark curiosity and learning by connecting the knowledge, resources, and expertise of the Smithsonian with a vital network of cultural and educational organizations. Responsibilities The Supervisory Museum Registration Specialist serves as Head Registrar for SITES, with oversight for planning, directing, supervising staff, and coordinating all aspects of SITES collections management functions and activities, including participation in the research, planning, concept development, organization, production, scheduling, financial and budget management, tour maintenance and administration of exhibitions. In this position, you will: Provide leadership, technical advice, and guidance to registrar staff. Provide oversight to ensure that SITES/SA’s mission, collections management procedures, and exhibition policies are maintained. Develop and monitor collections management policies, procedures, systems, and standards in support of SITES/SA’s mission to travel exhibitions. Serve as a part of SITES/SA leadership and participates in all required aspects of SITES/SA planning and operations. Oversee the establishment of goals, priorities, schedules, and checklists. Supports all organizational policies and initiatives. Participate in proposal review process and exhibition development roadmap. Requirements Conditions of Employment Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility. Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service. May be required to serve an 18-month probationary period for supervisors. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as 1) directing and overseeing the planning and coordination of all aspects of collections management to include fabrication, research, financial and budget management, and other logistical activities for traveling exhibitions and 2) supervising staff within an organization or at other facilities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Education There are no basic education requirements for this position. Additional Information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
