Job Description
Job Title: Museum Curator


Department: Parks & Recreation


Reports To: Parks & Recreation Director


Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)


Starting Wage: $14.00-$17.50 per hour DOE


Close Date: August 8, 2019


Hours: Average of 10-15 hours per week


Position Summary


This position is responsible for performing a variety of general administrative and professional duties as needed to plan, organize, direct, and manage the acquisition, classification, and display of historical artifacts, documents, and materials. This position will oversee museum volunteers.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


  • Oversees and coordinates museum volunteers to ensure the required day to day tasks and operations of the museum are being met;
  • Attends regular board meetings; apprises of management and operational needs; discusses alternatives to various problems; makes recommendations to the museum board;
  • Coordinates day to day activity with Museum Board;
  • Recommends annual budget items to the Parks & Recreation Director;
  • Other duties as assigned;
  • Promotes community awareness and interest in the historical aspects of the state and community; develops and communicates notices and announcements to the general public;
  • Serves as an advisor to the museum board; makes recommendations for acquisitions, development of programs and services;
  • Coordinates tours and educational programs with local schools and interest groups; conducts tours and instructs tour members regarding museum articles and materials; develops and delivers lecture series;
  • Cooperates with local arts council; participates in related special event preparations;
  • Solicits contributions and donations of artifacts, photographs, documents, and other items with historical significance; receives and categorizes items; assures the proper preservation of museum items;


Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities


  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various age groups, history and arts organizations, and the public; Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; Read, understand, interpret, and explain rules and regulations; Coordinate work of volunteer members; Take initiative and quickly learn Office software; Work with a team;
  • Skilled in office management duties; Word and Excel processing; Composing correspondence; Handling multiple projects with interruptions; Prioritizing and organizing workload to meet deadlines;
  • Knowledge of museums and importance preservation of historical artifacts; Methods, processes, and procedures for the preservation of historical artifacts; Business English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; Organization, procedures, and operating details of the City department to which assigned; City government organization, functions, policies, rules, and regulations;

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to wet and dry conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderate to loud during events.


Minimum Qualifications


  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • Valid Driver's License


Preferred Qualifications


  • 2-4 years performing the above or related duties; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Bachelor's degree, or working towards a degree in fine arts, art, museology, historic preservation, administration or other related field; and
