About the Position
The Sonoma County Department of Health Services (DHS) is seeking a n experienced Supervising Staff Nurse to join the Behavioral Health Division. This position provides oversight to Behavioral Health nursing staff who are providing direct services to clients with severe and persistent mental illness assigned to the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and outpatient programs.. Services provided also include but are not limited to: assessments, case planning and management, crisis intervention and medication support, and rehabilitation including supportive housing and employment referral and linkage.
This position has full supervisory responsibility for approximately eighteen permanent nursing staff and several extra-help employees, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Licensed Psychiatric Technicians in multiple programs and locations. The Supervising Staff Nurse is also expected to be available for other programs when consultation is required on difficult or complicated situations, and may also provide direct services to clients. Additionally, the duties of this position include:
  • Providing support and guidance to Division staff on nursing-related issues
  • Providing oversight and audits to ensure the Division’s Medication Rooms meet federal and state mandates
  • Developing and maintaining policies and procedures related to nursing and medication support services
  • Overseeing pickup and disposal of medical waste
  • Training for nursing staff
  • Conducting employee performance reviews and hiring processes
  • Facilitating meetings of nursing staff
  • Creating the staffing schedule to ensure nursing staff coverage at the CSU and Adult Medication Clinic
The Ideal Candidate For This Position Will Possess
  • Experience with electronic health records
  • An understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to medication ordering, tracking, use, and disposal
  • Experience using a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach to providing services
  • Experience managing/supervising staff in a mental health treatment setting
  • Effective communication skills, and the ability to incorporate feedback from staff to improve operations
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to effectively interact with staff, stakeholders, and clients and their family members
  • The ability to write clear, step-by-step policies and procedures
  • Experience prioritizing multiple competing demands
  • Experience working with clients receiving Medi-Cal and familiarity with Medi-Cal billing and documentation requirements
  • A strengths-based supervisory approach
  • Skills in crisis intervention and de-escalation
About the CSU
The CSU's dedicated team of licensed mental health clinicians, psychiatric nurses, and psychiatrists provide crisis intervention, medication assessment, stabilization, and information and referral services 24-hours a day, 7 days a week for adults, youth, and families experiencing a mental health crisis. The CSU provides up to 23-hours of supportive care, including medications for individuals in an acute mental health crisis. For those needing a higher level of care, voluntary crisis residential services or inpatient hospitalization are arranged.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Any combination of education or training that would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in nursing would provide such opportunity.
Experience: Any combination of training and experience that will provide the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, two years of related experience as a Registered Nurse would provide this opportunity. One year supervisory experience is desirable.
License: Possession of a valid California license as a Registered Nurse, as required by Title 22, current CPR certification.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Thorough knowledge of: modern methods, theories, techniques and procedures used in professional nursing.
Considerable knowledge of: skills in leadership, management, supervisory theories and techniques; current developments in the nursing profession and methods of informing all levels of nursing staff of these developments; methods to assess and evaluate care and services; skill in performing and demonstrating advanced nursing techniques; safety, emergency and infection control policies and procedures.
Knowledge of: basic research methodology, report writing and statistics; communication and conflict resolution techniques; all aspects of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation; legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements relating to the management of the hospital departments; patient rights and confidentiality requirements.
Ability to: analyze problems, reach practical conclusions, institute effective changes; develop and update policies and procedures; lead and motivate staff; establish and maintain effective professional working relationships; prepare and present clear written or oral presentations; direct the development and maintenance of; write, understand and analyze a variety of comprehensive records and reports; exercise responsibility, initiative, ingenuity, independent analysis and judgment in solving supervisory problems; identify continuing education needs of personnel.
