Job Description
UC Irvine’s Department of Surgery faculty members have expertise in multiple complex diseases and are integrated to sub-specialties including cancer, gastrointestinal disease, vascular diseases cardiovascular diseases, hepatobiliary disease, trauma and surgical critical care.
The position of Physician Assistant (PA) in the Department of Surgery, requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various division of department of surgery, including Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service. Duties include and not limited to assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the general surgery services as well as patients in the surgical intensive care unit. The PA will participate with inpatient sign out at beginning and end of shift. Follows up with the General Surgery teams/residents/attending physicians. Will be involved in trauma resuscitations and performing surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients. Responsibility for care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc) and follow-up, obtain consults as needed, and discharge patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. Triage phone calls. Responsible for the reviewing critical labs, follow-up of results with patient and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patient’s interpretation of health needs. Incumbent will identify and treat patients and manage treatment of hospitalized patients. The PA demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation. Under the supervision of Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care Services and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the PA will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. A PA is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in their area of specialization.

Required:
  • Current ACLS Certification.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point and Outlook).
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California PA license.
  • Successful completion of an accredited PA Program. Educational training and/or experience to support setting and patient population
  • Surgical services include scrubbing, draping, retracting, exposing, clamping, ligating and suturing.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese Educational training and/or experience to support setting and patient population.
  • Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Within one year of hire, PALS and ATLS certification.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload. Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
