Hearst Autos is looking for an engineer to build scalable and resilient backend systems. Our technology, tools, services and solutions touch hundreds of millions of lives by driving experiences, and growing businesses. Our team of engineers, product managers, data scientists and designers build a suite of products to lead the way in shaping and managing the future of publishing.
You'll join a diverse, supportive community of engineers who are creating a modern content technology stack - built from the ground up - to give our clients and users, tools that enable them to tell amazing stories and run their businesses more effectively. We’re using modern web technologies to do this, like Python, JavaScript, Node.js, GraphQL, and React. We’re building an open, service-oriented platform driven by APIs, and believe in crafting simple, elegant solutions to complex technological and product problems. Our platform is built on AWS and Kubernetes with deployments automated through Slack bots.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:

• Conduct design and code reviews, write maintainable and well documented code
• Participate in all aspects of agile software development
• Tackle difficult scalability challenges across the stack
• Design and build highly scalable and resilient full stack applications that are micro-services based on the backend and React powered on the frontend

Qualifications
Who You Are:

• 3+ years experience working with JavaScript, Node.js, and one or more modern frontend frameworks. React preferred
• Experience with AWS, especially EC2, RDS and SQS
• Experience with traditional agile methodology
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree a plus
• 3+ years experience and a track record in building and scaling production-grade applications that are resilient, and performant
• Knowledge of object-oriented or functional programming. Python preferred
• Deep knowledge of data stores and schema design - both NoSQL and RDBMS - Redis, PostgreSQL or MongoDB is a plus
• Experience working within a container ecosystem (Docker, Kubernetes)

Preferred Experience:

• A thorough understanding of distributed systems with an eye to catch performance bottlenecks from system metrics
• AngularJS experience
• Worked on a new app or website from inception to launch
• Experience working with designers through Figma

The base salary for this role is between $129,000 to $140,000 annually. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
