Job Description
Title : Sepsis/ECMO Coordinator
Scheduled Hours : Full Time; Monday-Friday; 40 hours a week
Job Summary :
The Sepsis & ECMO Coordinator is a health care professional working in collaboration with medical and hospital staff to identify and provide multidisciplinary care to the septic patient. The Coordinator provides clinical and professional expertise for patients, families and staff members. The Coordinator facilitates the bedside clinical care of sepsis to assure that all septic patients receive comprehensive and timely treatment interventions that are consistent with national and Advocate Aurora Health Care's best practice recommendations through program development and establishment of evidence based processes.
Responsibilities:
Site Sepsis Coordinator role
plans, implements, and evaluates a sepsis program including all systems necessary for a multidisciplinary hospital based sepsis team
current electronic medical record to identify septic patients and facilitate data collection processes to monitor and analyze outcomes to integrate performance improvement activities. Recommend additional reports as necessary
and interpret multiple sources of date to monitor metrics designed to evaluate efficacy of sepsis practices across the care continuum
abreast of all appropriate federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines including Advocate Aurora policies and protocol changes.
on septic patients both Emergency and Inpatient and collaborate with the clinical team to develop and implement sepsis bundles and best practice plans of care
with front line team members to identify and address barriers to care delivery and/or implementation and develop improvement strategies
and disseminate outcomes relating to physician adherence to and documentation of sepsis bundles
Sepsis Rapid Responses as available supporting the multidisciplinary team and address any obstacles to bundle adherence and provide specialty nursing service and patient care as appropriate
multidisciplinary services between Emergency Department, Critical Care, Medical-Surgical, or any other departments which may contribute to the care of the septic patient to ensure patient flow
the organization through facilitation of site level meetings and active participating in regional and/or system committees
Sepsis Education
and oversees sepsis related education for new and current team members
case studies and disseminate specific patient outcomes to the care team with a focus on education and alignment of best practices with patient care
Departmental meetings of key stake holders in ensuring continual education of sepsis measures and outcomes
ad-hoc in-services or formal classes to key stakeholders as necessary to promote ongoing learning and development of the care team
Sepsis Research with Evidenced Based Practice and Research
Nursing Research approach to improving outcomes including a base knowledge of the Internal Review Board (IRB) requirements
on multidisciplinary committees focused on advancing nursing research and nursing professional development
ECMO Coordinator role
1) Ensure Clinical Competence of ECMO team members
2)Development, implementation and continued administration of initial didactic class for new ECMO nurses
3)Development and implementation of hourly wet labs for nursing monthly for the first 6 months and quarterly thereafter (40 hours of wet lab time for ECMO nurses in addition to the time spent developing/planning the sims and dry runs)
4)Continuing education and annual exams for all ECMO team members
5)Monitor the number of ECMO hours of each ECMO nurse
6)Maintain training documentation for nursing, respiratory therapists, physicians
7)Annual performance evaluation on all ECMO trained staff
8)Monthly case reviews, M&Ms, process improvements
9)Equipment status/inventory and work with leadership to ensure there are adequate supplies
10)Collection of patient data and entering data into the ELSO Quality Reporting Platform
11)Ensure all regulatory policies, protocols, guidelines and/or practices are in place and followed
12)Develop ECMO policies and procedures
13)Educate family: develop and provide reading materials and meetings with family initially and weekly
14)Provide clinical support and expertise during cannulation, de-cannulation, etc
Position Requirements :
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with Current IL RN license
BSN required
Current AHA CPR and ACLS
Must possess at minimum 3 years critical care nursing experience as well as experience caring for VA ECMO patients
Problem solving and analytical ability
Exceptional communication skills necessary
High level of customer service skills required
Work environment includes probability of exposure to hazardous material and body substances
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other team member, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
