OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC GUARDIAN:
The Office of the Public Guardian operates under the aegis of a County Wide Strategic Plan to achieve health and wellness equity for all in Marin. Our team is dedicated to helping the community, diverse, professional, positive and client driven. We function as a cooperative team, emphasizing ongoing communication, both internally and in conjunction with other departments, agencies, and community partners and stakeholders. Our goal is to increase cultural responsiveness of our services, to improve customer experience and coordinate services across all county programs.
There is currently one (1) Senior Social Service Worker vacancy in the Public Guardian’s office within the Health and Human Services Department.
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time, or part-time positions that may occur while the list remains active. The Office of the Public Guardian is appointed by the Superior Court of Marin County and assists the most vulnerable adults; those individuals who, because of mental illness or cognitive decline, are unable to manage their own affairs.
The current vacancy is in the LPS (mental health conservatorship) unit. This position will take the lead in investigating referrals, reviewing records, and writing reports to establish LPS conservatorships, particularity those of a sensitive and complex nature (e.g., referrals from the criminal court). In this role, the SSSW will work closely with Behavioral Health Recovery Services case management and placement teams, as well as with jail mental health services. Additionally, they may serve as the liaison with contracted psychiatrists and arrange for assessments and testimony in contested establishments/renewals of LPS conservatorships.
HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE :
Health and Human Services has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. An option to telework up to three days per week and work the remaining days onsite in San Rafael, CA is available; however, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. While onboarding and training, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.
Our Highly Qualified Candidate:
The ideal candidate is familiar with programmatic laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of the Public Guardian’s Office and/or related specialized programs such as Behavioral Health or Adult Social Services, has outstanding leadership skills, and can work with a great degree of independence while also working collaboratively and cooperatively with team members.
In addition, the ideal candidate:
- Approaches working with their partners in a consultative and collaborative manner.
- Possesses an ability to exercise responsibility, initiative, integrity, and independent analysis and judgement.
- Has experience within the assigned Social Services function(s).
We recognize your time is valuable, so please note that you must have at least the following required Minimum Qualifications in order to be considered for this position:
Either possession of a Master's Degree in Social Work or a Master's degree in a two year counseling program by the time of appointment and two years of experience in adult social services as described below or possession of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent with coursework related to the field and three years of journey level casework experience of which two years were directly related to the assignment at a level comparable to the County's classes of Social Service Worker II or Deputy Public Guardian.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS:
All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
