Senior Grant Accountant
(002120)At the Port of Seattle, we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. Offers will be based on experience similar to the Port job being applied for as well as a review of pay rates for Port employees performing similar work. Salary ranges are under review and subject to change.
As Senior Grant Accountant, you will be responsible for maintaining financial, accounting, and grant support services to meet the needs of the Port and its grantors. Some responsibilities include preparing financial statements, maintaining cash controls, providing financial reporting and analysis, and supporting the Port’s Single Audit activities. In this role, you will work cross functionally with multiple teams across the Port, including Program / Project Managers and other grant accountants, to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local standards as well as any other grantor-specific obligations throughout the complete life cycle of grants.
- You will prepare journal entries to record grant activities including recognition of revenue and receivables as appropriate.
- You will perform advanced analysis, interpretation, and audit of financial and operational grant data to identify potential errors, research and provide recommendations to stakeholders and/or Program Managers to determine corrective action.
- You will work closely with accounting staff, finance departments, external auditors, and other government agencies to monitor and report the status of grants throughout the entirety of the grant life cycle and monitor, analyze, and maintain financial transactions and accounting for a wide variety of programs funded by federal, state, local, and private grants.
- You will track eligible costs expenditures, billed invoices, cash receipted, and revenues reported by funding source and/or contract and reconciling to the general ledger monthly, provide advanced technical grants accounting support work for Program and Project Managers.
- You will assist in the preparation of the annual Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) and related footnote disclosures.
- You will maintain and document internal accounting controls as required by federal, state, and local grantors to ensure appropriate use of public funds, maintain knowledge of departmental operations and systems, perform work within accounting parameters established by the department and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- You will support the Single Audit of the Port’s federal grant program by coordinating with external auditors, preparing schedules, and providing support for transactions as requested.
- You will prepare and submit the necessary billing documents, as appropriate to grantor agencies, track due dates and prepare reports for grantor agencies, verify invoices for allowable costs, and prepare monthly grant requests for reimbursement.
- You will prepare a variety of reports, statements, records, analyses, and financial compilations for federal, state, and local grantor agencies with varying reporting periods according to the specifications of the program’s needs.
- You will train and provide ongoing technical assistance to Program and Project Managers on compliance with applicable regulations and best practices managing grant awards.
- Effective Communicator – You possess strong written and verbal communication skills, proficient in presenting information creating reports, Additionally, you are able to communicate and present accounting information clearly and succinctly to non-financial professionals and respond to complex financial questions from the organization as well as outside organizations.
- Knowledgeable – You have thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), familiar with Uniform Guidance for allowable cost principles and management of federal grants and applicable laws and regulations pertaining to capital assets and funding, understanding of Single Audit requirements and standards, ability to understand and work with complex accounting and financial ERP Systems.
- Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business with emphasis in accounting and you have an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential.

- Experienced – You have six (6) years of progressive experience working in a general accounting environment with complex financial software, of which minimum of two (2) years of experience focused on grant accounting.

- Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
- Grade Review – The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port’s work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in early 2024.
- Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
- Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.
