Job Description

Sales Marketing Assistant, Crown Publishing Group

The Crown Publishing Group seeks a Sales Marketing Assistant to orchestrate Sales materials across its two key imprints, Crown and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press. From Self-Help and Memoir to Cooking and Humor, this role is responsible for working on an exciting, broad-ranging list of nonfiction titles. Perfectly situated for learning the inner workings of a publishing office—including what it takes to bring a book effectively to market—the position provides an excellent bedrock for publishing fundamentals while allowing for collaboration, growth, and relationship-building.

Crown is renowned as the go-to publisher of narrative and idea-driven non-fiction. As the preferred publisher of presidents and celebrities, Crown is responsible for some of the most high-profile publications of our time, including Michelle Obama’s Becoming, Susan Cain’s Quiet, Matthew McConaughey’s Greenlights, Matthew Desmond’s Evicted, and Erik Larson’s The Splendid and the Vile.

Clarkson Potter and Ten Speed Press publish today’s most influential and innovative voices in the cooking, drinks, pop culture, and lifestyle categories, and are the home of such celebrated voices as Ina Garten, Gina Homolka, Yotam Ottolenghi, Tieghan Gerard, Marie Kondo, and Claire Saffitz.

The Sales Marketing Assistant for Crown will be the key point person for sales reps both in-house and around the country, acting as a liaison between Publishing, Marketing/Publicity, and Sales. Daily responsibilities include coordinating with publishing teams to communicate and track deadlines for sales materials; creating presentations for and scheduling seasonal sales meetings; and assisting with the Advance Copy and Signed Edition Programs.

The Assistant should be highly motivated, enthusiastic about publishing, and love reading broadly and often. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who has strong writing and analytical skills, communicates clearly, and is invested in being part of a dynamic, fast-paced team. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and is comfortable asking for help when needed.

The position of Sales Marketing Assistant at Crown is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which will include but not be limited to creating and mailing dummy books, as well as attending author events and conventions.
We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT, & PA).

For consideration, please apply using our ATS system and include your
cover letter and resume. Here are some tips on how to apply for roles here at Penguin Random House.

The Role:

  • Scheduling weekly and seasonal sales meetings and spearheading follow-up with publishing and marketing/publicity teams
  • Trafficking catalog copy to publishers, web copy team, and Sales Directors; ensuring deadlines are met and providing materials to Sales Reps by respective deadline
  • Creating PowerPoint presentations for sales meetings; working with Publishing Managers and marketing/publicity teams to implement edits
  • Reviewing catalog copy, suggesting edits in accordance with best practices, and ensuring all edits have been completed
  • Executing departmental administrative duties as needed
  • Acting as a key liaison between publishing teams to communicate and track deadlines for sales materials, such as catalog copy, recorded editorial presentations, and early reading materials
  • Assisting with Advance Copy Program: soliciting quantities, coordinating with production team, monitoring inventory, creating early book mockups, and scheduling mailings

The Essentials:

  • Solutions-focused when met with challenges and can comfortably adapt to changes
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Exceptional attention to detail, the ability to prioritize, and strong follow-up skills
  • Ability to take initiative and problem-solve creatively
  • An avid reader who keeps up with trends and has an abiding interest in current events
  • A team player who treats others with respect and has the ability to build internal & external relationships with departments
  • Ability to anticipate deadlines and meet them
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal & written, used on timely follow-up over email and phone
