The New York Times is seeking a book editor to develop, pitch, and edit non-fiction books that complement Times sub-brands and content franchises. This role will focus on non-fiction across genres that could include cookbooks, puzzle books, lifestyle books, and young readers’ books, with the opportunity to also consider other select narrative non-fiction.
The ideal candidate will be a meticulous and creative editor and prompt and thorough communicator with a sharp eye. They will be organized and comfortable collaborating closely and tracking multiple projects. The role will be fully involved in the publishing process from ideation through submissions, production, and publication. This is an excellent opportunity to establish and nurture relationships within the Times as well as with book publishers and others in the publishing community.
Key responsibilities for this position include editorial management of book publisher partnerships and the identification of new creative and commercial opportunities.
  • Oversee book production by acting as the in-house editorial liaison between Times stakeholders, freelance contributors, and book publisher teams.
  • Identify new book publishing opportunities based on Times creative and commercial brand priorities and assess their potential value.
  • Ensure that all projects adhere to Times editorial standards.
  • Work with business-side partners on budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Manage multiple projects in various stages of production.
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders in all phases of the publishing process.
  • Collaborate with Times colleagues on development and submissions to book publishers.
  • Work with book publisher teams to package and position books.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to set priorities under pressure and multi-task effectively.
  • Broad knowledge of book production workflows and best practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to collaborate.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Strong editing capabilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years of book publishing experience.
  • Established contacts in the book industry.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Subject-area expertise in cookbooks and/or puzzle books.
  • Entrepreneurial curiosity
This role will report into Caitlin Roper, Executive Editorial Director of Books, Film/TV and Events.
The annual base pay range for this role is between $150,000.00 - $170,000.00.
