The Program for Maternal Health Equity (PMHE) at the Center for Urban Bioethics (CUB) is seeking a Clinical Research Nurse to join our team. PMHE is committed to conducting ethical, antiracist, and community-engaged research to advance and nurture the health, well-being and agency of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous birthing families in Philadelphia and beyond.

The Clinical Research Nurse will be responsible for the implementation of cardiovascular health coaching protocols along with leading all elements of the blood pressure self-monitoring program, primarily related to the PCORI-funded Change of HEART study. While the Clinical Research Nurse will report directly to the Principal Investigator, they will work closely with other members of the Change of HEART study team, including but not limited to the Senior Research Associate in charge of study recruitment, enrollment and follow-up visits, the Director of Community Engaged Research, the Director of Operations, and our community partner. This position is intrinsically linked to patient care. The Clinical Research Nurse will interact with physicians, other members of healthcare team and participants/families, providing leadership in patient safety, protocol development and compliance, and data quality.

Responsibilities include:
  • Keep up to date on latest evidence related to diagnosis and treatment of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy
  • Provide in-person and telephonic health coaching and education around diet, physical activity and weight control goals
  • Assist with 3rd party vendor’s maintenance of web platform for monitoring blood pressure, weight, diet and activity. Troubleshoot with vendor as needed.
  • Communicate regularly via EPIC, phone and in-person with other health care team members also engaged in the participant’s care, including but not limited to their Obstetric and primary care providers, outpatient nurses, doulas, etc., ensuring timely follow-up/appointments when needed
  • Respond to blood pressure telephonic and email alerts during daily work hours according to protocol. Document all contact with participants/clinical staff in REDCap and EPIC chart. Trouble-shoot alerts with research team
  • Ensure participants have smooth transitions of care between Obstetrics and Primary Care, scheduling and confirming follow-up at transitions of care appointments and long-term primary care as needed
  • Work with the Center for Population Health and Temple IT to integrate blood pressures into EPIC and ensure blood pressure Bluetooth devices are functioning correctly. Support and monitor protocol compliance of TUHS staff and provider
  • Lead education of research participants on self-monitoring of blood pressure and body weight, ensuring participants know how to use their blood pressure cuffs and electronic scales, and problem solve overcoming barriers when participants have difficulty self-monitoring
  • Connect participants with community resources/referrals as needed, including transportation, personal care needs, social services, etc
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with medical record abstraction of participant health information into REDCap.
  • Assist with recruitment, enrollment, and follow-up research visits, aiding in completion of questionnaires and anthropometric measures where needed.
  • Collaborate with other research staff to complete progress reports (specifically updating the data safety monitoring plan).
  • Assist with training of other staff (e.g., doulas) in cardiovascular health coaching protocols and blood pressure self-management.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to drive day to day research activities, supporting multiple active protocols simultaneously (e.g., also participate in additional projects including pharma-sponsored studies).
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
Professional licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of PA, with clinical and/or clinical research experience in Obstetrics, Primary Care or Cardiology. Bachelor’s degree in nursing or health-related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Experience using motivational interviewing or other behavioral strategies (e.g., stimulus control, goal-setting) in counseling about nutrition and physical activity for the treatment of obesity and/or hypertension
  • Prior experience with REDCap
  • Experience with culturally responsive interventions
  • Previous patient facing research and clinical work with pregnant and/or postpartum women

This position requires Child Abuse Certifications prior to the commencement of service.
This is a grant funded position.

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
