About the Public Health Institute’s Research Department

The Public Health Institute’s Research Department creates and sustains a vibrant research community of practice while expanding PHI’s research portfolio and driving a compliant, mission-driven research agenda for the communities we serve.

Position Summary

The Research Department Intern will help the Research Department’s staff in the development of resources and other support for its research programs. The intern will coordinate and develop a set of core Standard Operating Procedures for Research to further PHI’s stewardship of its research programs.

The intern will work closely with the Research Department’s leadership and will interact regularly with PHI Central staff and research programs.

This is a temporary full-time (40 hours a week) position that will last 89 days or less, from May to August 2023 (negotiable). The start date and anticipated end date of the position will be determined before the start of the internship.

This position is largely remote working with a team based across the United States with periodic meetings over the course of the internship at PHI’s headquarters in Oakland, CA, and thus candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area are preferred. Candidates based outside the Bay Area who are only able to work 100% remotely will be considered.

The intern will have the following learning and development opportunities during the internship:

  • Mentorship with experienced research and research administration professionals.
  • Interns will have access to PHI’s Learning Management System with over 4,000 online courses. The wide range of topics include project management, budgeting and financial management, emotional intelligence, decision-making, and conflict resolution.
  • Networking opportunities with internal PHI Central operations and programs including a hosted series of lunch and learns designed to educate interns about professional communication, PHI’s 200+ programs, and program management.

Full pay range for this position: $22.47 to $31.31 per hour. The typical hiring range for this position is from $22.47 (minimum) to $26.89 (midpoint) per hour. The starting wage is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Division Director and Special Advisor, assist in identifying and developing a set of core Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for research conducted at PHI. These SOPs will set the expectation for the conduct compliant rigorous research. Tasks include:
  • Conduct literature review, internal and external environmental scan to recommend ideal topics for the SOPs.
  • Coordinate a consensus driven implementation plan to prioritize and create the SOPs.
  • Develop an SOP template based on best practices and industry standard.
  • Research and draft prioritized SOPs.
  • Complete special projects as assigned and as time may allow.
  • Plan and help build the Research Department’s intranet page by identifying and preparing content to support the needs of the research community at PHI, including reviewing the latest data on the researchers needs, determining content and features that may support those needs and identifying tools and approaches to creating online engagement to foster collaboration and the sharing of knowledge.
  • Participate as an active member in the meetings and activities of the Research Department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in or in the summer after completing the second year of a Master’s degree program in public health (MPH) or a related field.

Other Qualifications

  • Well organized: Keeps information organized and accessible and manages time well.
  • Ability to work independently in a largely remote environment yet be responsive to requests, knows and completes responsibilities in assigned timelines, asks for clarifications when needed.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Knowledge of the conduct of clinical and non-clinical research preferred.
  • Skilled with computers, including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and remote work tools (Zoom, Slack, etc.). Experience developing and using online community billboards and calendars preferred.
  • Strong communicator: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience in technical or scientific writing preferred.
