The Subramanian Lab at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, WA is seeking to employ a full-time Research Associate (RA) to work at the interface of Innate Immunology and Systems Biology. The candidate will research the molecular mechanisms of innate immunity using a systems approach. The lab’s goal is to apply a combination of imaging, microarray/RNA-Seq, proteomics and bioinformatics approaches to the study of innate sensors, particularly the Nod-like receptors (NLRs) that serve as intracellular sensors of pathogens and tissue damage. The RA will work primarily in a wet lab setting; however significant opportunities exist for collaboration with a diverse team of computational biologists and software engineers on experimental design, analysis and biological discovery.
The successful candidate will have a BS in Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related field in life sciences, plus a 1 year of laboratory experience. The position requires previous experience with general cell culture techniques (maintaining and deriving cell lines), general molecular biology techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, cloning, PCR etc.) preferably including high-throughput transcriptional profiling techniques (qPCR, microarray, RNA-Seq), protein isolation and analysis (gel electrophoresis, immunoblotting, etc.), ELISA, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Prior experience with handling mice and basic mouse procedures (isolation of bone marrow, spleen and other organs, processing tissues for ex vivo culture, intra-peritoneal and other injection techniques) is preferred. Knowledge of data analysis, image analysis and common bioinformatics tools is a plus. Experience with bacterial research is a plus, but not required. Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral communication skills and strong work ethic are essential.
Duties & Responsibilities(include, But Not Limited To)

• Cell culture, maintaining and deriving cell lines
• Keeping detailed records in lab notebooks in accordance with the institute’s policy.
• Maintaining functional operation of lab equipment.
• Performing ELISA and flow cytometry assays
• Operating various laboratory equipment and computers.
• Informing senior staff of inconsistencies or problems with projects or experiments.
• Preparing research reports, summaries, and contributing to manuscripts.
• Performing various laboratory techniques and procedures. Examples include:
• Isolating and measuring mRNA (e.g., qPCR, microarrays or RNA-seq)
• In vivo experiments in mice
• Fully complying with the institute’s health & safety procedures and practices.
• Maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
• Supporting the development of protocols and experimental design.
• Attending seminars/meetings to enhance knowledge in project objectives and scientific discipline.
• Performing gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE and agarose gels)
• Maintaining knowledge of current topics and research literature in areas of scientific work.
• Collecting, analyzing, and documenting experimental results.
• Executing basic research plans and studies utilizing established scientific methods and protocols.
• Performing molecular cloning and/or transformation
• Lab maintenance including stocking shelves, ordering equipment and supplies and cleaning work areas.
