Job Description
Job Summary
Boston Children’s Hospital offers an invigorating working and training environment in the McGraw Research Group within the laboratory of Dr. Ann Poduri. We’re looking for an enthusiastic new team member to join us in dissecting the molecular mechanisms of epilepsy and refractory seizures, developing and characterizing zebrafish models of epilepsy, and identifying novel targets for anti-seizure drug development. You will work under the direction of a physician scientist with training in Neurology and Epilepsy, Dr. Chris McGraw MD, PhD (Instructor, HMS) and also meet regularly with the lab’s Principal Investigator. You will be exposed to cutting-edge gene editing technology (CRISPR/Cas9), genetic screening techniques, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and drug-screening. Exposure to software such as MATLAB and R as desired. This position is ideal for a self-motivated, organized individual interested in working in a highly collaborative, dynamic research environment.

This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:
  • Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Fluorescence imaging of genetically-encoded calcium and other indicator proteins
  • Maintains records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.
  • Maintains equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner.
  • Adhere to the completion of other tasks and duties as assigned
  • Performs the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:
    • Maintains records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.
    • Maintains equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner.
    • Sterilize and clean glassware, prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
    • Inventories supplies alerts supervisor to needed supplies, or mixes standard reagents.
    • Processes order for supplies and/or animals.
    • Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials.
    • Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Molecular biology techniques (PCR)
  • Maintaining detailed records of all experiments in lab notebook
  • Assists in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor.
  • Microinjections to generate novel zebrafish by CRISPR/Cas9 and transgenesis
  • Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
  • Inventories supplies alerts supervisor to needed supplies, or mixes standard reagents.
  • Animal (zebrafish) husbandry and genotyping
  • Processes order for supplies and/or animals.
  • Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials.
  • Sterilize and clean glassware, prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
  • According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, performs a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy.
  • Participating in weekly group meetings (including occasional presentations of your work or related topics of interest)
  • The research assistant will perform cellular, molecular and/or physiological experiments independently
In order to qualify you must:
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM or Psychology, and or a minimum of one year of relevant work experience.
  • Must work effectively in a team environment with the ability to interact professionally with all levels of lab staff

  • Excellent written/oral communication and organizational skills are required
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs and willingness to learn new computer software as needed
