Terms and conditions: Permanent, full-time, News Media Guild position
Salary Range: $75,000 - $100,000 p.a.
Purpose of role
Guardian US is seeking a journalist to report on race, identity, and inequality, with an eye toward the American South. The reporter will produce stories across a range of topics within this beat, including culture, health, education, social justice, politics, religion, education, and the legacies of American slavery.
Key responsibilities
This person will be a skilled writer who can produce a combination of daily and enterprise stories that break news and provide deep analysis about race. They will prioritize ideas about Black communities in southern states, such as the Gullah Geechee people, and explore the wider implications of issues in this region for the rest of the nation. This reporter is a curious and original thinker, and has an intuitive sense of what makes a story interesting. They can surface new ideas, and they also have a knack for developing fresh angles on familiar subjects. This reporter will explore these issues largely through a mix of short- and medium-form enterprise reporting and features, as well as breaking news stories when required.
Reporting on race and racial inequity is core to our mission-driven journalism. We're looking for someone keen on exploring the full spectrum of life in America for people of color. Successful candidates will be enterprising and ambitious; they are brimming with ideas on undercovered topics that Guardian US can own.
This role is open to candidates based anywhere in the US, with special consideration given to people based in the south. The Guardian has bureaus in New York City, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, and reporters living near one of our offices come into the office two days a week. Fully remote employees in other locations will be expected to attend some team gatherings in New York throughout the year.
