Guardian US launched in 2011 and today has bureaus in New York, Washington DC, New Orleans and Los Angeles. The Guardian is an independently owned, mission-driven organization, funded by readers around the globe.

Job Title: Reporter, race and equity

Department: Editorial

Reports to: Deputy editor, race and equity

Location: New York, NY / Remote

Hybrid/Remote/In-Person: Hybrid

Terms and conditions: Permanent, full-time, News Media Guild position

Salary Range: $75,000 - $100,000 p.a.

Purpose of role

Guardian US is seeking a journalist to report on race, identity, and inequality, with an eye toward the American South. The reporter will produce stories across a range of topics within this beat, including culture, health, education, social justice, politics, religion, education, and the legacies of American slavery.

Key responsibilities

This person will be a skilled writer who can produce a combination of daily and enterprise stories that break news and provide deep analysis about race. They will prioritize ideas about Black communities in southern states, such as the Gullah Geechee people, and explore the wider implications of issues in this region for the rest of the nation. This reporter is a curious and original thinker, and has an intuitive sense of what makes a story interesting. They can surface new ideas, and they also have a knack for developing fresh angles on familiar subjects. This reporter will explore these issues largely through a mix of short- and medium-form enterprise reporting and features, as well as breaking news stories when required.

Reporting on race and racial inequity is core to our mission-driven journalism. We're looking for someone keen on exploring the full spectrum of life in America for people of color. Successful candidates will be enterprising and ambitious; they are brimming with ideas on undercovered topics that Guardian US can own.

This role is open to candidates based anywhere in the US, with special consideration given to people based in the south. The Guardian has bureaus in New York City, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, and reporters living near one of our offices come into the office two days a week. Fully remote employees in other locations will be expected to attend some team gatherings in New York throughout the year.

Key contacts and relationships (internal)

  • US deputy editor for race and equity
  • Other correspondents across the US, the Americas and worldwide
  • Desk editors in New York
  • Platform and section editors

Knowledge, experience, and skills

  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with others in the newsroom on video, audio, and interactive forms of content for the web and mobile
  • Strong track record of writing about race, identity, and inequality issues with nuance and cultural competence
  • At least five years of reporting experience
  • Track record of forming productive relationships with diverse industry organizations, interview subjects, and other contacts
  • Excellent news judgment and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
  • Expertise in using documents, data, and other journalistic tools to develop and report stories
  • Ability to generate fresh ideas and angles that appeal to our global readership

How to Apply

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven't thought of. If that's you, we encourage you to apply and tell us about yourself.

The closing date for applications is Monday September 4th 2023.

All candidates interested in applying should upload a resume and cover letter as one document.

Guardian News & Media is an equal employment opportunity employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability, national origin or citizenship.

We value and respect all differences (seen and unseen) in all people at the Guardian.
