Job Description
Newsweek is a global news publisher that provides high quality, in-depth coverage and analysis of the major events shaping our world. For more than 80 years, the iconic brand has been offering readers a unique perspective on world affairs and giving context to the most important events in global news. Today, via its print and digital editions, Newsweek continues to help its readers navigate a rapidly-changing world.

As Newsweek celebrates our 90-year anniversary, join us in starting up an all-new team to focus on fan-focused coverage of trends and big moments in sports. Newsweek is seeking a trending sports reporter to join a new team that will share rapid-fire trending sports news and offers insightful commentary to millions of daily readers. The ideal candidate has a keen interest in a broad array of sports and understands what makes fans passionate about their teams and what aspects of a sports story could appeal to non-fans as well. This isn't about covering the granularity of box scores — it's about representing human tales, stunning victories, bits of drama and live perspective on league-wide momentum.

Responsibilities:

  • Spotting and turning compelling features: Sports is about ordinary humans doing larger-than-life feats. The best features will move past dedicated sports readers and appeal to a broad readership.
  • Finding and delivering quick hits on trending topics for sports fans and a broader audience: Fast coverage of athletes and trending topics both on and off the field is the bulk of this reporting job. In a competitive environment, being first is important. If we can't be first, your ability to find creative angles or different looks at the subject is key.
  • Crafting commentary with national appeal. As the team develops sourcing and expertise, the right candidate will know when to zoom in on the specific narrative of a team or player versus providing commentary on broader looks at the state of a conference or league.

Requirements:

  • Multitasking reporting and writing speed. While we measure impact and readership more than activity, this beat will deliver multiple stories a day while chipping away at timely commentary or broader enterprise pieces over multiple days.
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced digital news environment, with sports experience strongly preferred.
  • The ability to understand audience, using search and social media skills for story tips, sentiment and audience potential.
  • Familiarity with real-time readership resources like Chartbeat, Parse.ly, Google Trends or Google Analytics is a plus.
  • Clean, accurate writing. Editors will be there to backstop your work, but ensuring accuracy starts with you.
  • Basic understanding of digital news media tools like Microsoft Office, Wordpress and similar tools of the trade.
  • The ability to be a self starter, coming up with unique story angles to boost audience and build Newsweek's authority in sports.

Salary Range : $50,000 - $70,000

Newsweek is an equal opportunity employer. We seek employees of diverse backgrounds and are committed to providing an inclusive, equitable and respectful workplace.
