Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. The primary responsibilities of the referral underwriter will be to:
  • Provide training on underwriting concepts, market trends, and relationship management.
  • Handle referrals from the underwriters in a timely manner;
  • Complete underwriting audits on brokerage underwriters; and
  1. Analyze information on new and renewal business in order to accept, price, modify or reject business within delegated underwriting authority level.
  2. Build trusted relationships with underwriters and educate underwriters on business that falls within or outside the unit’s underwriting appetite.
  3. Show expertise and knowledge of current market trends, conditions, and competition in the marketplace.
  4. Educate and provide feedback to underwriters informally through referrals and formally through brokerage underwriting audits.
  5. Assist in responding to regulatory and compliance issues, as needed.
  6. Provide advice to underwriting and product management on areas and opportunity for improved growth, profit, and diversification.
  7. Actively participate in continuous improvement by generating suggestions, participating in problem solving activities and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.
  8. Document files that demonstrate a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account review.
  9. Participation in internal or external training.
  10. Perform other specific duties and projects as assigned by management.
  11. Attendance

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent required, college course work or degree preferred.
  2. At least 15 years of casualty underwriting experience required.
  3. Excess and surplus lines experience preferred.
  4. CPCU, CIC or other applicable designations preferred.
  5. Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  6. Possess existing reinsurance relationships and knowledge of reinsurance trends and pricing.
  7. Must be detail oriented and capable of handling multiple tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  8. Understand and explain coverages, rules, forms, and bases for pricing decisions to agents/brokers and company personnel as needed or required.
  9. Strong verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills.
  10. Must provide customer service to both external and internal customers.
  11. Ability to interact professionally with others.
  12. Sit, stand/walk ambulatory.
  13. Ability to lift ten pounds.
