What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a motivated scientist who will use radiography capabilities (i.e., digital radiography, computed tomography) to evaluate the internal structure and integrity of manufactured components. As part of the Sandia/California Radiography team, the selected candidate will support component design and process development, materials evaluation, failure analysis, product and process qualification, and other activities where radiography and other non-destructive analysis techniques are required.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Utilize radiographic imaging and analysis to answer critical questions about the engineered components important to our scientific and national defense missions
  • Promote a safe working environment through analysis of hazards, development of controls & mitigations, and documentation of safety-focused operating procedures and best practices
  • Present results at workshops, conferences, and meetings with sponsors
  • Develop fixtures for effective two- and three-dimensional radiography imaging using conventional and advanced manufacturing methods
  • Conduct innovative experiments using various techniques including digital radiography, computed tomography, x-ray fluorescence, and auger spectroscopy
  • Process imaging data using various software including Volume Graphics
  • Identify new research ideas and directions, collaborating with colleagues to write research proposals.

The Nuclear Deterrence Materials and Radiation Effects department is committed to attracting, retaining, and cultivating an outstanding workforce representing a broad group of people and perspectives. This hardworking team works together to accomplish extraordinary results. While this position requires expertise in Radiography, the job title will be R&D S&E, Materials Science.

Qualifications We Require

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field plus (1) year of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
  • Experience with x-ray imaging technologies (e.g., digital radiography, CT) and analysis
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Familiarity with image analysis software and processing digital imaging data
  • Publication of research results in peer reviewed journals
  • Ability to work autonomously, while integrating effectively into a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to team with others of diverse backgrounds

About Our Team

The Nuclear Deterrence Materials and Radiation Effects department provides expertise in materials and radiation sciences to support Sandia’s missions in nuclear deterrence, proliferation detection and energy. We steward radiography capabilities and exercise them to image and analyze the structure of materials and components. We develop and characterize organic and inorganic materials used as scintillators in radiation detection technologies. We perform detailed modeling, simulation, and experiments to characterize and analyze the effects of ionizing radiation on materials and components used in our engineered systems. All of this is accomplished by bringing to bear our advanced capabilities and the team’s expertise in materials science, chemistry, physics, computation, and engineering.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
