Job Description

L

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Radiation Control Technician to join the Radiation Protection Group in the Environmental Health & Safety Division. This position has general responsibility for radiation protection activities at Berkeley Lab, including surveillance of radiological work areas, radioactive material management, data/records management, radiological characterization and sample collection/analysis, air monitoring and sampling, and incident investigation and corrective actions. This is a great opportunity to work with an experienced Environmental Waste & Radiation Protection team to support science and operations at Berkeley Lab, while building a rewarding career with a highly regarded research institution!

With over 90 years of conducting research, the research conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is always evolving and provides new and unique challenges to overcome. Our researchers conduct fundamental research using several world-class accelerator facilities, work with actinides in chemistry labs, as well as numerous x-ray imaging devices. Always poised to receive another Nobel Prize in fundamental science, our world-class, internationally diverse team of researchers continues to push the envelope of what is possible.

Our focus in Radiation Protection Group is the compliance and technical field support of radiological work (radioactive materials lifecycle management, shipping and receiving of radioactive materials, and radiological worker training). The variety of on-site radiological hazards requires a Radiological Controls Technician that is adaptable, inquisitive, with broad technical knowledge, and is able to implement a variety of radiation protection strategies in a research environment. The opportunity to witness a first-of-its-kind event is an everyday occurrence at LBNL.

What You Will Do:

At the Radiation Control Technician 2 level:

  • Perform release surveys of materials, equipment and property from areas controlled for radiological purposes to uncontrolled areas.
  • Independently perform radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactivity) of laboratory, construction areas, remediation sites and other work areas; generate associated documents, reports and audits in support of assigned area(s).
  • Conduct and/or support assessments, audits and other measures needed regarding radiological incidents. Respond to contaminated personnel/areas and other radiological incidents and emergencies, and participate in corrective action.
  • Provide specialized radiological support during preparation, packaging, and shipment/transfer of radioactive materials, as well as during operation related to Material Control and Accountability, and Nuclear Material Management.
  • Evaluate radiological conditions within various types of facilities and work locations to support the development of radiologically work authorization, work plans, survey plans. Post/label areas and items controlled for radiological purposes.
  • Independently perform complex radiological work activities required to implement Berkeley Lab’s Radiation Protection Program to assure safe and compliant radiation protection as set forth in Radiation Protections Group’s policies and procedures.

At the Radiation Control Technician level 3 duties and responsibilities include those from the 2 level plus:

  • Works independently on routine assignments with little or no instruction from supervision or technical authority. Given limited and prescriptive program/project directions, is expected to perform major components in an ES&H project.
  • Applies knowledge, skills and experience to process and resolve more complex health physics situations or problems. May require limited instruction or mentoring from supervision or technical authority for complex and large tasks and assignments.

At the Radiation Control Technician level 4 duties and responsibilities include those from the 2 level and the 3 level plus:

  • Performs operations and tasks to carry out major components in an ES&H project or program.
  • Given broad and general program/project assignment with the expectation to manage assigned projects and programs independently with minor status updates with guidance from supervision.
  • Works independently on all assignments with little or no instruction from supervision or technical authority.
