Job Description

Exciting long term contract (12+ months) opportunity with SLAC!


The Instrumentation and Control Department within the Facilities & Operations Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Process Control Instrument Technician to join our team. This is an “entry level” position with at least two years’ experience as an apprentice or level 1 Instrumentation technician.


Members of this team are tasked with the upkeep of the Labs industrial control system pneumatic and electronic distributed instrumentation and control systems i.e. hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic. In addition, Lab Grade LN2 and N2, Argon and Helium Gases, Oxygen Deficient Monitors, Domestic Water and Natural Gas Meters, Wireless Sensors and Sanitary and Storm Lift stations. We design, install, modify, and maintain these Industrial/Utilities control systems. We control and monitor these systems with IGNITION SCADA by Inductive Automation from the centralized Facilities Control Center operated and managed by the I&C department. In addition, the Instrumentation and Controls department has two additional teams Predictive Maintenance and Facilities Control Center Operators.


Reporting to the Instrumentation and Controls Steward, the Process Control Instrument Technician will work as an assistant to or under the general direction of a Specialist and/or Lead Process Control Instrument Technician while performing the following duties.


Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Some work is in hazardous areas, involving access to high voltage, chemicals, elevated work surfaces and radioactivity.
  • Evaluate and Install new process control systems and associated equipment.
  • Specify with vendors and submit parts order.
  • Prepare Job Safety Analysis (JSA)and apply proper safety procedures.
  • Keep records and making oral and written reports of work performed.
  • Perform rounds, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
  • Instrument calibration team member.
  • Modify existing instruments and control loops necessary to meet changing requirements.
  • Utilize equipment such as pneumatic and electronic instruments for measuring temperature, pressure, pH, flow, power, current, voltage and other analytical signals.
  • Ability to continuously learn new technologies in the field of industrial instrumentation.
  • Install, tube bending, leak check and repair Pneumatic and Lab Gas Stainless Steel, Cooper and Poly Tubing.
  • Respond to a wide range of Service Desk request to install, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, maintain and commission the instrumentation and controls for conventional plant/laboratory facilities i.e. Low Conductivity Water Cooling System, Cooling Towers, Pneumatic and Gas Control Systems; utilities that include Sanitary and Storm Lift stations, Holding tanks controls and Samplers, and other utilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Document work on Computerized Maintenance Management System “Nuvolo” and iAT.
  • Maintain instrumentation inventory, documentation, spreadsheets and procedures.
  • May work rotating shifts and overtime as operational needs dictate.
  • Perform Predictive Maintenance on Mechanical and Electrical equipment in data gathering and reporting.
  • Troubleshoot PLC's I/O (Allen Bradley SLC5/05, ControlLogix, Siemens and other PLCs etc.), loop controllers, and relay logic.


Additional duties

  • May be assigned as an Off-Duty Operator or Off-Duty Process Control Instrument Technician as operational needs dictate.
  • May be assigned to the Predictive Maintenance Team operational needs dictate.
  • Process Control Instrument Technician will serve as Primary Backup Operator duties in the Facilities Control Center (FOC) when the Primary Operator is not on Duty.


To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Ability to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate pneumatic and electronic instruments and control loops.
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude to learn critical control systems.
  • Proven experience demonstrating the ability to learn new systems.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 E, and applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret instrument, piping, electronic and electrical schematic and wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read Ladder logic.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious relations with other employees and vendors.
  • Live within an hour drive for callback duty.
  • Must be able to resolve issues independently and in a timely manner.
  • In-depth knowledge of electronic, pneumatic, mechanical and hydraulic instruments and controls (electronic or electrical circuitry).
  • Ability to identify hazards associated with work and to develop methods to mitigate those hazards.
  • Ability to utilize personal computer (or any other technology platform) and related software applications necessary to review system maps/records, submit and complete trouble tags, and access/review procedures, policies, other company documentation and reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming and PID control loop tuning/optimization.
  • Must be able to work from prints, sketches and/or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform electronic work involving wiring, soldering and proficient in tube bending.
  • A combination of relevant education, certification and experience in Industrial Process Control Systems or Water/Wastewater industry instrumentation, Oil Refinery or Power Distribution Control systems or Pharma/Biotech Process Control Systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment and have an emphasis on quality service.


In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Currently pursuing education and training in Instrumentation & Controls.


Certifications and Licenses:

  • Completion of Certificate of Achievement/Specialization in Industrial instrumentation or Electrical Power System Instrumentation, or Electrical/ Instrumentation Technician I from California Water Environmental Association (CWEA).
  • Possession of an AA degree in electronics or equivalent college course credit; OR
  • California non-commercial driver’s license.
