Position Summary
The Quality Control Specialist I is responsible for collecting and processing data into the California Cancer Registry statewide database, by performing accurate and timely casefinding; abstracting data based on records from physician’s offices and various other sources; performing tasks related to death clearance, including screening and classification, and updating of case data; performing visual editing, linkage and consolidation of data submitted by reporting facilities and other regional sources; and resolving modified records. The Quality Control Specialist I may also assist with regional and statewide tasks as necessary.
This is a remote regular full-time position.
Full salary range for this position: $66,843 to $96,905 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $66,843 (minimum) to $81,874 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Processes reportable electronic Pathology (ePath) reports in the casefinding system, including screening and classification and linkage.
- Participates in software testing (Statewide DMS) as well as in testing of new technology.
- Assists with special studies such as the SEER POC as needed.
- Abstracts Physician Only, Path Only, Death Certificate Only, Nursing Home Only and Coroner’s cases.
- Participates in statewide audits and reliability studies as requested.
- Abstracts for assigned contracted reporting facilities, which include but are not limited to surgery centers, radiation centers, or hospitals.
- Maintains at least 97% accuracy on abstracts.
- Attends all data collection section meetings, Visual Editing section meetings, Data Collection Unit meetings and Public Health Institute/CRGC quarterly meetings as required.
- Codes and enters paper pathology reports, Confidential Morbidity Reports, and Radiation Oncology reports into the casefinding system as needed.
- Performs other duties or assists with other regional activities as required or assigned.
- Provides clear, concise feedback on data items to be in error (Discrepancy Reports) to regional facility registrars.
- Performs case-finding for contracted facilities as needed.
- Performs visual editing, linkage, and consolidation of cancer reports.
- Processes modified records and other related tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, or substitute with four additional years of related experience.
- At least 2 years of related experience in a hospital, regional or central cancer registry.
Other Qualifications
- Ability to travel overnight to perform field work if necessary.
- Strong communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate accurately, concisely, and clearly.
- Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy and physiology, and the cancer disease process.
- Knowledge of cancer reporting requirements, required resources, manuals, and other tools for the collection, abstraction, and editing of tumors reportable in California.
- Credentialed by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) as a CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar).
- Strong mathematical skills including statistics, elemental computations and averages/percentages.
- Must maintain at least a 97% abstracting accuracy rate set by the California Central Registry (CCR).
- Experience in creating clear and concise documents (PowerPoint, memos, etc.) for educational purposes and statewide distribution.
- Must be able to pass a background check required for this position.
- Ability to abstract, or learn to abstract within six-months of employment.
- Ability to travel to educational meetings for specific periods of time.
- Experience in using knowledge of regional/central registry operations to include data collection, visual editing, case consolidation, casefinding, follow-up and follow-back procedures and auditing.
- Ability to learn and operate new software programs.
- Must maintain CTR credentials by attending either in-person or virtual educational meetings or other methods as prescribed by the NCRA.
- Ability to travel if necessary.
