Job Description
The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff “for fit” makes significant contributions to Howard University’s overall mission.
BASIC FUNCTION:
The purpose of this position is to provide pedagogical, administrative, and research training and support for a Research Fellow in the School or College through including, but not limited to (a) academic career development, (b) development of research products, publications, and open source software (c) development of new skills and knowledge in laboratory methods.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Involves no responsibility or authority for the direction of others.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include assistant/associate deans, directors, department heads/chairs, faculty, staff and students at the College and school levels; and, deans, directors and executive level officers at University level. External contacts include research collaborators, industrial partners, government research labs, governmental agencies such as Federal and the District of Columbia Agencies, students, parents and the general public.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Participates in academic, didactic, and professional training provided through seminars, workshops and direct meetings with faculty.
  • Develops laboratory methods and models in collaboration with other researchers including faculty, students, and external researchers.
  • Conducts data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation.
  • Coordinates and assure development of pertinent reports and their timely delivery.
  • Develops and maintains quality assurance and quality control procedures for laboratory methods.
  • Participates in grant writing, development of manuscripts and reports, and conduct of primary and secondary data analyses.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Program Director especially those related to research training, mentoring, and interdisciplinary projects.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented interdisciplinary environment with an interest in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Competence in both oral and written English and ability to articulate concisely and in a professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Demonstrated computing experience and knowledge, including software packages such as word processing, database applications, and spreadsheet.
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in microbiology with experience in microbial culturing, reactor maintenance, microbial community ‘omics, bioinformatics (HPC usage), and/or modeling experience.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants should have received, by the activation date of the postdoctoral fellowship, a Ph.D. (or similar doctoral degree) in one of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar area Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or similar area. Doctoral students in the dissertation phase of their training will also be considered.
