Job Description
The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff “for fit” makes significant contributions to Howard University’s overall mission.
JOB PURPOSE:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct experiments at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Washington, DC using its high-pressure facilities and perform data analysis. Other duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with data collection, providing research support to Dr. Mohammad Mahmood and, and other research related inquiries as required. The candidate will report to Dr. Mohammad Mahmood.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will assist in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students working on this research project.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Laser heated diamond anvil cell techniques will be used in combination with time-resolved spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction to monitor chemical reactions at previously unattainable range of pressures and temperatures.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Developing and applying new pulsed laser techniques for studies of fast chemical kinetics and dynamics I simple molecules and energetic materials.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Strong written and organizational skills
  • Strong oral presentation skills
  • Strong research skills using high-pressure studies of materials.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • The successful applicant will hold at least a PhD degree in Material Science. They should have at least three (3) years of post-doctoral research experience.
