Class Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing technical duties in criminal identification work related to the collection, preservation, and identification of physical evidence, both visible and latent, in a variety of police laboratory work areas, including photography and fingerprinting; and performs other work as required.

Essential Duties:
- Maintains fingerprint files
- Prepares evidence for presentation in the prosecution of criminal and other cases
- Produces a wide variety of photography work
- Takes fingerprints from city, alien registration, and from private origins as required
- Directs and carries out the collection, preservation, and identification of physical evidence in investigations of murders, suicides, accidental deaths, burglaries, traffic accidents, and arson
- Takes, copies, downloads, prints, and enlarges photographs of accidents and crime scenes
- Provides expert testimony related to evidence.
- Assists in or conducts specialized investigations related to criminal cases
- Analyzes evidence through a variety of photographic and fingerprinting techniques and tests

- Approved principles, practices, and procedures of scientific police investigation and of the rules and regulations of the department.
- Modern office equipment including a computer an applicable software
- Modern developments and research in the field of police laboratory techniques, methods, and practices and in the presentation of evidence
- Criminal law, with reference to the rules of evidence, arrest, seizure, and requirements necessary to the prosecution of cases in the areas of assignment
Ability to:
- Work independently
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Prepare clear and comprehensive technical reports orally and in writing.
- Operate an office computer and a variety of word processing and software applications related to work
- Obtain information through interview and observation
Skill in:
- The use and care of equipment and apparatus used in photography, fingerprinting, and crime scene processing/evidence collection.
Training and Experience:
- Six months experience in general police work including police identification, or an equivalent combination of training, experience and certification which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.
- Graduation from high school or G. E. D.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This class is distinguished from Police Crime Lab Supervisor in that the Police Laboratory Technician is in the White Collar Unit and not responsible for supervisory level responsibilities

- A Valid California Class "C" driver's license
- Must be able to pass a police background check

- Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, call-outs, standbys and outdoors in all weather conditions.

1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).
RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement website for additional information.
