BACKHAUS Pastry Baker

Backhaus is a new bakery in San Mateo that opened in June of 2019. We are a group of passionate and driven bakers, baristas, and lovers of hospitality, intent on changing the idea of what people believe a bakery can be.


Backhaus is hiring a new baker to join our talented pastry team. We are looking for someone who is a team player through and through, is always excited and open to keep learning, and is motivated to grow with our young company.

You:

  • Are a good communicator;
  • Have experience as a baker, especially working with viennoiserie and other pastries;
  • Are just as comfortable working alone without supervision as you are as a member of a team;
  • Enjoy our style of bread and are obsessed with continuously learning and improving your craft.
  • Have great attention to detail and love analyzing product quality to ensure that we consistently meet and exceed our high quality standards;
  • Are excited to work with a young and motivated team in a fast-paced, supportive environment;
  • Are comfortable using standard bakery equipment;

This is a full-time, hourly position (+tips) based out of San Mateo and is a 4/10's schedule.


Our pastry bakers report directly to the Head of Pastry Team.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mixing of doughs, batters, and other components;
  • Shaping;
  • Baking;
  • Lamination;
  • Mise-en-place, scaling, and other prep;
  • Clean-up, etc.
  • Work alongside the pastry team in production of all our pastries.
  • Daily production tasks include, but are not limited to:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must obtain Food Handlers certificate within 30 days of hire
  • Proficiency with Google Drive, spreadsheets and general comfort with use of technology.
  • Excellent communication and teamworking skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. (Required)
  • 1-2 years experience in a bakery or restaurant setting.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The physical requirements listed are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Regular and consistent attendance and the ability to sit and work with hands and arms for at least eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week.

Physical ability to stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, walk, crawl, push and pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Stand and move throughout the cafe/bakery.

Must be able to interact with employees/customers for at least eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.

Have consistent and reliable onsite attendance at the bakery.

Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills in English.

Interpret and follow a variety of instructions and procedures furnished in English - written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Write routine reports and correspondence.

Meet daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly and other deadlines consistently.

Work under pressure with changing priorities.

Communicate effectively and promptly to clients, vendors, and employees of the organization.

High level of manual dexterity to adeptly type and use computer equipment.

Auditory and visual skills – Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Ability to work overtime occasionally at the last minute.

Stand stationary in the bakery throughout the shift for periods of time (up to 10 hours per day, 4 days per week).

Compensation Details

Compensation: Hourly ($18.00 - $25.00) plus tips

Estimated Weekly Tips: $400
