Statement Of Job

The Art Department at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a Part-Time Faculty position in Art Education beginning this Fall 2023 semester with subsequent semester to be determined. The applicant will teach undergraduate Art Education courses and supervise student teachers in K-12 placements.

The University of Southern Maine’s Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA) in Art Education program offers an in-depth studio experience as well as a professional course of study in art education leading to teacher certification in Maine. Additionally, we offer a BFA in community art education which includes teaching experiences based within community arts, non-profit arts, and regional art organizations. Both programs are guided by a conceptual framework that proposes that individuals need to be prepared for work in an increasingly complex and culturally diverse world, and that such work is best done through collaboration and reflective inquiry.

We seek a faculty who can help us extend and expand our commitment to the education of diverse learners in schools and community settings, through the thoughtful preparation of contemporary art educators. This position provides professional development opportunities, and options to develop and teach new courses in art education at both the graduate and undergraduate level.

The Art Education faculty will be responsible for teaching one class a semester along with supervising student teachers in both k-12 and community-based field placements.

Courses May Include, But Not Limited To

Practicum in Art Education (AED 221): This course introduces students to art education theories and processes through readings, writings, discussions, observations, and field experiences. The class examines the relationship between art making and learning in different contexts.

Principles and Procedures in Art Education (AED 321): This course prepares students to be engaged and innovative teachers and artists. Students research and experience different curricular models and pedagogies through art. They apply this new understanding, -alongside artistic, educational, and life experiences- to craft a teaching practice that meets the needs of all students.

Student Teaching (AED 324): This course is the practical portion of the Art Education program’s capstone experience. During a two-semester student teaching experience, supervised by mentors in placement schools, students observe, assist, and take full responsibility for teaching art to elementary and secondary school students.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. In addition, USM employees can use their USM Card to access the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center(s). USM also offers part-time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.
