The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong background in facilities maintenance and repairs, is an experienced professional who has exceptional work ethic, demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, and possesses broad experience in providing excellent customer service. This individual will be an excellent communicator, will communicate well with park visitors as well as with peers and supervisors, will thrive in a fast-paced environment, and will meet the needs of the department. THE POSITION

The Park Maintenance Worker III (PMW III) is the advanced skill level classification in the series. The PMW III performs specialized maintenance and repairs and leads a maintenance crew performing varied skilled and semi-skilled maintenance activities in parks, recreational areas and publicly owned landscaped areas, supervises entrance station and park business activities, provides information to the public and responds to public inquires. This person may be assigned to work at various County parks in the system. This individual is assigned lead worker responsibilities and works with a greater level of responsibility. This individual may also be assigned to supervise entrance station and cash-handling activities. This position is subject to overtime, standby, weekend, holiday, and callback assignments. Works under general direction and performs related duties as assigned.

Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Crafts/Maintenance Institutional bargaining unit for labor relations purposes.
Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.

Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

Typical Tasks

  • Perform the more specialized maintenance and repair tasks of parks, landscaped areas, historic buildings and structures and public facilities;
  • Ensure that safe working practices are followed; and
  • Operate tractors, backhoes, bulldozers, aerial life trucks, riding lawn mowers and other equipment;
  • Handle money and perform cash control and closeout procedures on the cash register;
  • Campsite electrical and plumbing repairs;
  • Inspect grounds and facilities for needed cleaning and repair, and notify supervisor of conditions requiring attention;
  • Assist supervisor in the planning and scheduling of maintenance and operations activities;
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing;
  • Check work progress periodically to ensure schedules are met and work is completed according to plans and specifications;
  • Coordinate the work of crews to ensure work standards and procedures are met, and report on their performance to supervisor;
  • Provide customer service to park and reservoir guests;
  • Bathroom repairs;
  • Give instructions to crews regarding procedures to be followed;
  • Supervise and train personnel;
  • Prepare financial reports and maintain financial records;
  • Lead and serve as working member of the crew(s);
  • Delegate specific work assignments to crew members;
  • Train crew members in maintenance and operations techniques;
  • Keep records of work completed, materials used and crew time on projects;
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Prepare Maintenance Schedules;
  • Trail work, lawn care, tree trimming;

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Perform heavy physical labor;
  • Operate power equipment and vehicles, such as tractors and attachments;
  • Perform ground maintenance and repair work;
  • Effectively lead workers performing maintenance and operations tasks; and
  • Instruct, direct and supervise the work of others;
  • Recognize common plant diseases and inspect pests;
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Maintain good working relationships with co-workers and members of the general public;
  • Keep written records and prepare reports.
  • Estimate material and labor requirements;
  • Analyze situations accurately and take effective action;
  • Read blueprints, interpret and work from plans and specifications;
  • Identify potential safety hazards;
  • Use and care for hand and power tools;
  • Prepare and maintain routine records and reports;
  • Apply or supervise the application of pesticides in accordance with State regulations;
KNOWLEDGE
  • Fundamentals of basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry work;
  • Use and care of gardening materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of parks and recreational facilities;
  • All aspects of construction and maintenance methods relative to parks;
  • Common safety practices and procedures; and
  • General Building Code provisions;
  • Proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring for hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers;
  • Hazards and safety precautions in construction and maintenance work.
  • Operation, uses and repairs of trucks, tractors and other mechanical equipment used in park maintenance and landscape work;

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Obtain licensing or certification in one of the following areas: Class A or B driver license, arborist, playground equipment safety inspector, backflow prevention device tester, pool operator, State Water Resource Control Board of California Grade 1 certification in: water distribution operator, waste water treatment plant operator. Note: License/certification is dependent on departmental need. Employees who are unable to obtain the license/certification within 12 months of hire may have their probationary period extended up to an additional six (6) months. Failure to obtain the license/certification within 18 months may result in demotion or termination; AND
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
  • A Pesticide Applicator's Certificate issued by the State of California, including laws, regulations and basic principles, landscape maintenance, and rights-of-way, must be obtained within one (1) year from the date of appointment. Failure to do so may result in demotion or termination; AND
  • Three (3) years of responsible experience in park maintenance, construction and landscaping work. One (1) year must be in a lead capacity; AND
