Job Description
  • Demonstrates high quality customer service; builds rapport/relationship with the consumer.
  • Performs legal research using the department’s online research tools and interprets/prepares summaries of applicable case law.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Associate’s degree from accredited college or university required;
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and auditable records, files, and reports.
  • Searches court records for recent activity and confirmation of guardianship and possessory rights of parents in campus matters involving access to students and student records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Analyzes and prepares summaries of records reviewed.
  • None.
  • Environment: Works in an office; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Knowledge of online legal research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis.
  • Experience in public sector environment preferred.
  • Ability to exercise discretion regarding matters of a sensitive or confidential nature.
  • Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
  • Performs all job-related duties as assigned and in accordance to the Board rules, policies and regulations. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.

    • Associate’s degree from accredited college or university required;
    • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, especially Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
  • Monitors assignments to outside counsel and assists in facilitating communication between outside counsel and internal department liaisons.
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Participates in the Title IX Complaint process; provides legal support to the Title IX Decision-maker and Appeals Officer in collection, review, and organization of evidence and drafting preliminary responses.
  • Completes substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts including maintains legal records/files, reviews and prepares material for storage or disposal once a matter is closed.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as law, policy, and procedures.
  • 4-7 years’ paralegal experience required;
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Certification/License: Paralegal Certification preferred.
  • Conducts routine inquiries and facilitates the collection of documents, including locating employees with relevant documents/information and scheduling attorney interviews as needed.
  • Records and maintains attorney calendars including scheduling of meetings.
  • Knowledge of records administration and maintenance techniques and procedures.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.

  • Ability to use software to access databases, email, create spreadsheets, and do word processing.

  • Creates and maintains electronic records/files in a centralized database and prepares statistical reports based on cases and issues.
  • Dockets all internal grievances/appeals and external complaints for tracking deadlines and due dates, including preparation of routine documents such as closing memos and other legal filings.
  • Collaborates to gather evidence and records from other departments and external entities.
  • Knowledge of legal research procedures and legal resources of the federal, state, and local courts systems in Tarrant County and the State of Texas.
  • Prepares briefs and motions in final format, including automating Tables of Contents (TOC) and Tables of Authorities (TOA).
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Exhibits high professionalism, standards of conduct and work ethic.
  • Skill in researching and writing with a strong knowledge of legal correspondence formatting, including language, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of general and education employment law and hearing procedures.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work, including maintaining attention to details and quality, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines, often changing assignment on short notice.
  • Drafts a variety of legal documents, including answers, motions, discovery responses and requests, briefs, and routine correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written form including legal writing and research using appropriate citations.
