We’re looking for an Ocean Research Scientist II to work with our R&D team on designing and modeling carbon removal solutions. The Ocean Research Scientist will apply their knowledge of physical oceanography as well as their computational skills to design interventions and quantify the carbon removed via the carbon removal pathways utilized at Running Tide.

This is a full-time salaried remote position with the option to work locally in Portland, Maine.

You Will:

• Contribute to the design of carbon sequestration strategies by demonstrating intervention potential using computational models
• Contribute to Running Tide’s Ocean Modeling Platform
• Perform hands-on modeling for carbon sequestration via marine carbon dioxide removal technologies (i.e. macroalgae cultivation, terrestrial biomass sinking, OAE)
• Work with leading ocean and climate models
• Guide the development of laboratory and field experiments to enhance Running Tide’s knowledge of oceanography

You Are (or You Have):

• Experience with geophysical fluid dynamics models, especially ocean dynamics models
• Programming competency - experience with computational modeling in Python or other relevant languages and frameworks
• Experience working with in-situ data analysis
• Eager to collaborate with a fast-moving team and support large-scale carbon sequestration initiatives
• In-depth knowledge of multiscale ocean dynamics, especially with respect to near-surface ocean dynamics
• A recent PhD or postdoc, or industry equivalent, in physics, biogeochemistry, oceanography, or related field with an emphasis on quantitative and model-based techniques; knowledgeable of and fluent with research-standard models and tools.
• Experience with technical writing

Bonus Points:

• Experience with geospatial analysis
• Experience contributing to large collaborative code-bases
• Oceanographic field experience
