NURSE PRACTITIONER RESIDENCY PROGRAM DIRECTOR:This Nurse Practitioner will function as the Residency Program Director. The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic Veteran-centric care through collaborative strategies with others in this training program. The director provides expert coordination of educational experiences and training for residents specific to preparation for the primary care provider role and Veteran-centric care. They provide expert advice and consultation on graduate education and works in partnership with community affiliates to position clinical staff and graduate nurses as full partners in the health care team.
The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates:

  • Systematically evaluating current practice, developing curriculum, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise
  • Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes
  • Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective; andUsing professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities
  • Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning
  • Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities
Additionally, this role will demonstrate compliance with provider status and required supervising practitioner guidelines.
The Nurse Practitioner is an expert clinician who is clinically and academically qualified to provide leadership within the Cincinnati VA Medical Center, providing expert patient care and facilitating the residency program development and implementation of educational initiatives to include curriculum development and program evaluation components. The director executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, research and creative approaches to APRN role transition and career development. They also implement plans to achieve program objectives that align with institutional strategic initiatives and will work collaboratively with APRNs, departmental, facility leaders, and academic partners to assure the achievement of organizational mission, goals, and expected outcomes.
In the role, curriculum and experiential development and education will be provided for program participants, providing didactic and clinical education and supervision of residents, participating in scholarly activity as appropriate, and participating in necessary research, committee work, public service and professional organizations.
This position will report directly to the Chief Nurse, Professional Staff Development with collaborative responsibilities to Primary Care and Education Service; will oversee and manage program and supervise program APRN residents.

Work Schedule: Primarily Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with the possibility of off-duty tours to included weekends and holidays.

Basic Requirements:
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

  • English Language Proficiency. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]
Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience with educating, orienting, developing and mentoring Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, with emphasis on primary care programs
  • Prior curriculum development
Physical Requirements: Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. Regarding this specific RN position, this position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The RN may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The RN may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The RN must be capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. In the performance of duties, the RN may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
