Job Responsibilities


Notice to Applicant: Pursuant to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Omnibus COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination Interim Final Rule (IFR), the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (SCDDSN) has established COVID-19 vaccination requirements and exemptions for staff who provide any care, treatment, or other services in Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICFs/IID). The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) is the state agency that plans, develops, coordinates, and funds services for South Carolinians with the severe, lifelong disabilities of:


  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury and similar disability
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Intellectual disability and related disabilities


About Midlands Regional Center


Midlands Regional Center is a residential facility of the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs located in Columbia, SC serving residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.


Interviews, selects, and assigns nursing personnel to primary work location.


Provides direct oversight to RN's on assigned shifts. Evaluates RN's and serves as reviewer for evaluation of LPNs.


In consultation with HR, follow proper procedures for conducting disciplinary action as needed.


Develops and/or maintains nursing schedule for all shifts and adjusts schedules as needed to assure appropriate nursing coverage is maintained.


Provides active leadership in assuring compliance with the federal/state regulations, SCDDSN policies and procedures and accepted nursing standards of care and practice.


Keeps abreast of new nursing trends or research with possible application towards improving the health care of consumers. Provides for an participates in educational enrichment programs so that personnel are current with new concepts and approached in the delivery of services to consumers.


Performs other related duties as assigned by the Nurse Administrator/Manager II. Minimum and Additional Requirements


State Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and related nursing experience.


Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.


Agency Additional Requirements: Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Bachelor Degree in Nursing, (3) year diploma in nursing, or an associates degree in Nursing with at least 2 years of clinical nursing experience in clinical nursing and long term care environment. Must have (1) one year of nursing supervisory experience and CPR Certification.


Preferred Qualifications


Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing and their relation to the prevention and control of disease.


Ability to plan, organize, supervise and inspect the work of others.


Ability to instruct and direct nursing personnel and work independently under the supervision

Immunization: All new employees are required to complete (2) step PPD testing prior to beginning employment. All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, Varicella and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.


State Disaster Plan: In accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DDSN employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.


College Transcripts: Applicants indicating college credit or degree(s) on the application are required to provide an official, certified copy of the transcript prior to hiring or within a specific time frame required by that area, after hiring.


Driving Record: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver's license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
