Student Counseling Center
The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for the position of Mental Health Therapist in the Student Counseling Center. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time; non-tenure track staff position.
Student Counseling Center is the university’s primary facility for personal counseling, psychotherapy, and mental health outreach and consultation services. The mission is to promote the psychological, educational, and social well-being of the students at the University of Tennessee and to help prepare them to be productive members of a global society. The Mental Health Therapist is a key member of the multi-disciplinary clinical team providing both clinical services and, as appropriate for the level of licensure, supervision within the center’s diverse training programs or clinical supervision of pre-licensed professional staff.
The Position:
The Mental Health Therapist contributes to the well-being of the student body as a full member of the clinical team. This position provides brief assessment, crisis intervention, and traditional forms of psychotherapy (individual, groups), while also engaging with the campus community via outreach and consultation services with faculty, staff, students, and families around mental health concerns.

Mental Health Therapists in the center also provide training/supervision for master's and doctoral level students in mental health professions. As a member of the multi-disciplinary clinical team, the mental health therapist provides clinical services, case management, outreach, and support for the mental health needs of students served by the Student Counseling Center.

What We Require
Education: Master’s Degree in a mental health field (Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family, or related)
Experience: Experience managing mental health crises including assessment of suicidal and homicidal risk.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong communication/interpersonal/organizational skills
- Knowledge of assessment/diagnosis/treatment of mental health concerns common to the university population
- Knowledge of developmental issues of university students
- Ability to provide effective/culturally competent counseling services to diverse student population
- Ability to provide consultation to non-mental health professionals regarding mental health issues
- Ability to work collaboratively with department/division/university personnel while maintaining client confidentiality
- Ability to comply with all ethical and legal requirements for a mental health professional in Tennessee
What We Prefer:
Experience:
- Two (2) years of post-graduate experience providing mental health services and/or 1 year experience providing services to university students
- Independently licensed at the Master’s clinician level in the State of Tennessee
Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.
