Summary of Job Duties:
The Plain Language Writer will be responsible for developing, editing, testing, and implementing health education materials for use by patients and community members. They will work with CHL program staff, other UAMS departments, external partners and clients, and patient and community representatives in achieving those goals. The writer will assist in the development and delivery of other CHL communications (e.g., for purposes of business development and teaching). This position reports to the CHL Director.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in health-, writing-, or communications-related field with at least 2 years of experience writing.
Additional minimum requirements:
  • Completion of CITI training within first 2 months of employment
  • Excellent technical writing skills (testing required) which demonstrate mastery of grammar and usage along with ability to organize and convey complex scientific information
  • Proficiency with using Microsoft operating system and Microsoft 365 (or Office) software and experience in using Adobe Acrobat DC and other Adobe products.
  • Ability to self-manage workload and organize projects and tasks for timely completion
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Plain language training to be completed during first 6 months of employment with documented mastery of skills according to rubric
  • Some in-state travel is required, out-of-state travel occasionally (no more than 1 time per year)
  • Occasional attendance at after-hours events
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in health education, patient education, health promotion, or health-related communications
  • Master’s degree in health-, writing-, or communications-related field
  • Experience in writing health content
  • Certified Health Education Specialist or Certified Medical Writer
  • Health literacy and plain language training
Additional Information:
Responsibilities:
  • Other program and service-related duties as assigned
  • Assess, edit, and create health materials for UAMS research, clinical, and outreach functions and for contract and grant deliverables using plain language best practices and knowledge of health behavior theory
  • Support UAMS education efforts by developing and delivering health literacy / health communications content across colleges and via Interprofessional Education
  • Develop and deliver communication (e.g., blogs, social media, articles, presentations, proposals, training materials) in support of CHL objectives
