Job Description

Salary: $20 - $23 per hour.

Summary:

Responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting results. Work closely with Laboratory Technical Supervisor to ensure efficient and smooth laboratory operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage shipping and receiving of test samples, specimens and supplies.
  • Ensure relevant research information is communicated timely to the Research Director or designated research staff including study supply inventory, instrument functioning, courier delays, etc.
  • Manage inventory and ordering
  • Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance. Package and ship quality control material and proficiency testing to our external labs per PPGC protocol.
  • Receive all patients for clinical services in a courteous, efficient manner when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with all PPFA and PPGC policies.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the Laboratory Technical Supervisor.
  • Participate in laboratory proficiency testing per CLIA regulations. Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as specimens.
  • Ensure all specimen containers are labeled with proper patient identification.
  • Perform high complexity testing under the on-site direct supervision of a supervisor, if required by personnel qualification requirements.
  • Monitor test analysis and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Ensure all instrument calibrations are performed when they are due; initiate any remedial actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Perform Research lab tests as instructed by Research Director including investigational instrument testing, IUO (investigational use only) accountability, In-Pouch QC and microscopy (3 day or 5 day), and result reporting in paper or electronic format.
  • Perform laboratory procedures per protocol for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Archive laboratory reports per CLIA regulations.
  • Document all positive or abnormal patient test results; ensure patient results are not reported until all corrective actions are taken (as needed) and test systems are functioning properly.
  • Annually evaluate and document performance of testing personnel
  • When delegated by Technical Consultant:
    • Assure all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications
    • Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning
    • Provide orientation to all testing personnel
    • Annually evaluate and document performance of testing personnel
  • Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning

Qualifications

  • Masters of Science with 2 years of lab experience or training with a minimum of 3 months proficiency in specialized area OR
  • Bachelors of Science with 4 years of lab experience or training with a minimum of 3 months proficiency in specialized area.
  • One-year minimum work experience in a lab or health care setting preferred.

Education and/or Experience:

Masters of Science (MS) or Bachelors of Science (BS) with requisite years of experience as noted above.

Preferred Education: Medical Technologist (MT) and/or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with a certification from accredited laboratory medicine organizations listed ASCP, AMT, AACC, ASCLS, ASM.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Computer Skills

  • Experience with Electronic Health Records and/or Laboratory Information Systems
  • Basic computer skills with emphasis on use of MS Word and MS Outlook required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (preferred, not required)
