The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research, and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology department has an outstanding opportunity for a MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 2 (FULL-TIME, DAY-SHIFT)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
On General Bench
  • Perform Coagulation testing such as PT, PTT, Thrombin Time, Fibrinogen, Ddimer assays and mixing studies when ordered on the STA-Compact.
  • Perform heparin contamination checks and removal protocols in accordance with SOPs.
  • Perform Liquid anti-Xa testing for UF Heparin, LMW Heparin, Rivaroxaban Level, Apixaban Level, Chromogenic factor X, DTI and Dabigatran levels, Factor VIII and Factor IX levels when ordered on the STA-Compact.
  • Perform Platelet Function Screen assays on the PFA-100.
  • Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Coagulation General Bench procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material, according to SOPs.
  • Perform Maintenance Procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Coagulation General Bench instruments according to SOPs.
    In Satellite Lab – If Trained
  • Perform Thromboelastograph testing using TEG 5000 instruments. Transmit TEG tracings on select OR patients to their respective ORs.
  • Perform Hematological analysis – Platelet counts and Hematocrits – using Sysmex KX21N instrument
  • Perform Limited Coagulation testing on STA-Compact, available in Satellite Lab
  • Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Satellite lab procedures requiring the running of Quality Control Material according to SOPS.
  • Perform Maintenance Procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Satellite Lab instruments according to SOPs.
    Special Coagulation Bench – If Trained
  • Perform Heparin Induced Platelet Antibody testing, Plasma Hemoglobin testing and other special or research assays as trained and according to SOPs using the BioTek Eon Plate Reader.
  • If trained, perform Platelet Aggregation studies on the ChronoLog, Whole Blood LumiAggregometer.
  • Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Special Coagulation Bench procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material, according to SOPS
  • Perform Maintenance Procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Special Coagulation Bench instruments according to SOPs.
    In General
  • Process and store Coagulation samples for various Coagulation Assays. Process and store samples for various Research Testing projects. (May include precipitations, multiple centrifugations, aliquotting plasma into vials and placing in appropriate freezers or refrigerators.)
  • Enter patient and Quality Control Data into the LIS. Notify Reference Lab Services to fax results as needed and follow SOPs to fax results to outside locations when RLS is not available.
  • Involved in training and teaching MLS program students and new employees.
  • Be familiar with Departmental “Environment of Care” Policies, Work Place Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace and CQI.
  • Be familiar with and able to use the Coagulation Lab procedure manuals.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientists may be asked to perform other more specialized Coagulation testing and test development as needed and in accordance with training.
  • Perform testing on Proficiency testing materials when asked by the Coagulation MLS Lead or by the MLS2 and in accordance with departmental SOPs.
  • Troubleshoot instrument issues, knowing when to call one of the groups that support the Coagulation lab like LabMed IT or Stago Support Hotline.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
    MLS 2 Duties
  • The MLS 2 may be asked to perform other more specialized Coagulation testing and test development as needed.
  • Be able to critically review data generated and entered into the LIS by another MLS in Coagulation either in the Main lab or SAT lab. This includes checking for typographical errors, checking if data makes sense, if unusual or critical values have been handled correctly etc….
  • Be able to discuss their errors with the MLS responsible. (Provide constructive critical feedback)
  • Be able to assist in the evaluation of the monthly QC to perceive drift or other problems that may require further investigation or monitoring
  • Assist the MLS-Lead in Coagulation with new lot reagent evaluations, with new test validation and with new instrument validation
  • Assist the MLS-Lead in Coagulation with the writing up of new procedures
  • Create purchase requests and receive purchases in Purchase Path.

    REQUIREMENTS:
  • Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience
    AND
  • Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division AND Two years experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience.

    DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience in critically reviewing data entry and QC.
  • Able to demonstrate skills in teaching, organization and in communication with colleagues
  • Experience with STA Compacts, TEG 5000s, EIA assays and Whole Blood Lumiaggregometry
