Job Description

Duties

The Managing Director of the Supreme Court Fellows Program guides day-to-day operations of the Program under the direction of the Counselor to the Chief Justice, who serves as Executive Director of the Program, and the Supreme Court Fellows Commission appointed by the Chief Justice. Four Fellows are placed annually for year-long appointments at the Supreme Court of the United States, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the Federal Judicial Center, and the U.S. Sentencing Commission. The Managing Director leads strategic recruitment planning; works with courts and law schools to present at virtual and in-person recruiting events; supports the Commission in application review and selection; and leads planning for marquee annual events. The incumbent plans and leads intensive orientation programming for each new class of Fellows annually; facilitates internal and external Fellows meetings on topics of judicial administration and the courts; guides research projects and manages support provided by senior staff of participating agencies and outside academic advisors; organizes research workshops; facilitates Judicial Conference committee presentations; and works with the Administrative Office and agency supervisors to manage human resource administration, ethics questions, and work portfolios. The incumbent also provides support to the Counselor to the Chief Justice on writing assignments, management projects, and dignitary reception as assigned.

Qualifications

The position requires a minimum of ten years of professional experience related to law or the judiciary, with a record of high performance in responsible positions. Experience with the Supreme Court Fellows Program (or another government Fellows Program) preferred; experience with judicial administration preferred. The position requires excellent analytical, research and writing skills; demonstrated ability to do high-quality work with minimum supervision under tight time constraints; in-depth knowledge of the federal court system; understanding of government ethics administration; and teaching experience with professional or undergraduate educational programs. The incumbent must be collegial, tactful, and articulate in dealing with a broad range of individuals within and outside the Courts.

Education

A J.D. degree or Ph.D. is required.
