Parks & Environment:
The Parks and Environment Division of SPR presents an exceptional opportunity to work with a team of professionals dedicated to maintaining safe parks, education, community engagement, and enforcement within the department and throughout the communities.

About the Position:
The Park Security Manager 2 position reports to the Emergency Management and Parks Security Manager 3 and will oversee the new Park Ranger program and manage the Park Ranger Supervisor, Seniors, and 28 Park Rangers. This position is accountable for data reporting of the unit's key performance indicators related to the 2023-24 Metropolitan Parks District Initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

Management and supervision of the Park Ranger program to provide excellent customer service.

Education
  • Support visitors in having a safe and enjoyable park experience.
  • Serve as a liaison between the City and park users by answering questions and handing out informational literature about the park system and City resources.
  • Provide wayfinding and general park information to the public.
  • Provide excellent customer service, anticipate and solve problems, and educate visitors on park safety rules, codes of conduct, and permissible/impermissible park uses.
  • Educate visitors about our parks, monuments, and memorials by interpreting the role of important people and events or cultural experiences that shaped our park system.
E n gagement
  • Support SPR and other city responses to climate action.
  • Lead interpretative experiences for youth and community groups.
  • Support the care and stewardship of Seattle’s parks, facilities, natural areas, and other assets.
  • Provide knowledge and information about park features and the surrounding environments.
  • Monitor park areas for damage to grounds, equipment, and/or facilities.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment and buildings or grounds in need of maintenance or repair.
En forcement
  • Oversee City parks and designated areas on foot, by bicycle, and/or vehicle to monitor park activity and to inform the public and enforce rules, regulations, laws, ordinances, and municipal codes pertaining to the use of parks and facilities.
  • Mitigate and deter inappropriate activity in City parks by conducting regular patrols and establishing a routine and meaningful presence.
  • Assist with seasonal beach fire and coastal programs.
  • Secure doors, gates, and parks at closing time.
  • Complete incident reports and document appropriate intakes and referrals to other agencies.
  • Respond and assist with park emergency situations occurring on park properties or in response to citywide activations.
  • Engage with rule violators by providing education about SPR rules and municipal codes to foster compliance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, public or nonprofit administration (including social work), business, operations, park security, or a related field (Or an equivalent combination of education and/or training and/or experience).
  • Three years of experience managing a large section, unit, or division, related to the park ranger duties outlined above in a large multi-level public or private sector organization, facilitating diverse groups and interests. Direct experience supervising park rangers or security staff or equivalent experiences.

  • Regulation practices of safety and security matters with employees and stakeholders.
  • Strong motivation, delegation, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of guidelines including department and City policies and procedures, Traffic Code Manuals, Traffic Incident Management (TIM), and security and safety laws and regulations.
    • Knowledge and experience with the city’s ordinances (i.e., Seattle Municipal Code – 18.12 Park Ordnance), laws, and rules that apply in or on parks and city facilities.

    • Strong Communication skills to work with other city departments, and law enforcement agencies to ensure staff is informed of special instructions.
    • Innovation and creativity in problem-solving ideas.
    • Knowledge of guidelines including department and City policies and procedures, Traffic Code Manuals, Traffic Incident Management (TIM), and security and safety laws and regulations.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Strong motivation, delegation, and decision-making skills.

    • Experience dealing with a variety of personnel issues and working with bargaining unit contracts.

The full salary range for this position is $47.85 - $71.80 per hour.
