Job Description

Duties

The major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs inspections and maintenance of smoke/fire barriers in addition to all necessary repairs in order to maintain the standard and integrity of the barrier;
  • Assembles, adjusts and repairs grab bars, guardrails, shelves, windows/shades, ceiling grids, locking devices, hinges, door closures, ceramic tiles, floor tiles, interior/exterior trim and other miscellaneous items;
  • Chooses the correct metal and distinguish material characteristics that can cause corrosion, disintegration and metal fatigue stress on components;
  • Installs and repairs walls/floors/ceilings by being glued, fastened, screwed, bolted or by any acceptable means of attachment;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs general maintenance support work to accomplish facility level new construction, minor improvements and renovation work, including equipment maintenance, repair, assembly, disassembly and installation;
  • Constructs and makes repairs to existing structures by utilizing plans, drawings and by following verbal directions;
  • Uses a variety of trade practices associated with General Mechanical principles at the journeyman level;
  • Installs/maintains items such as towel/soap dispensers, handrails, fans, glove boxes, sharp containers, etc.;
  • Performs sheet metal work and uses skills and knowledge to fabricate, repair and construct a variety of items from metal;
  • Uses skill to create and make repairs to equipment throughout the facility;
  • Performs daily inspections and repairs to assigned areas and makes repairs as necessary to ceiling structures, lighting fixtures, door closures, windows, floor tiles and walls; and
  • Creates irregular angles, shapes, designs and pieces utilizing various metals while working powered and hand tools;
  • Masonry work involves maintenance, repair and construction assignments utilizing various types of ceramic brick, cement block, face brick, glass block, terra cotta and artificial or natural stone;
  • Performs routine and complex installations of building structures utilizing masonry, woodworking/carpentry and sheet metal working skills;
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Subject to overtime and emergency callbacks, as the needs of the facility demand.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Maintenance Mechanic frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment and parts weight up to twenty (20lbs) pounds and less often to ninety (90lbs) pounds. The person in this position is subject to cuts, bruises, falls and other dangerous conditions. The journeyman must meet the physical requirements in order to perform proficiently the duties assigned to the position. The Maintenance Mechanic must have the ability to work under stressful conditions and every changing goals and demands. The person in this position may be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard to reach places. The person in this position may be required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, walk, reach and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

The person in this position works both inside buildings of various types and outdoors and is subject to varying work conditions, which may include tight and confined spaces and heights of 10 feet or more. The person in this position is exposed to dust, dirt, odors, fumes, loud noise, and will be required to work primarily in a medical center and can be subjected to various types of diseases and infections. May be required to work in all types of hazardous weather conditions, rain, sleet, snow, wind including hot and freezing temperatures and may be required to perform duties in a research facility, or off the normal station, at remote medical clinics. The person in this position must be able to do the work of the position without harm and must be aware of safety hazards and follow all established safety procedures.

Driver's License Requirement (Screen-out): This position requires driving a government vehicle to perform the official duties of the position; therefore, a current, valid state-issued driver's license is required. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
