The Opportunity

In this individual contributor role, you will be an integral part of MassMutual’s MMUS Product & Operations Law team, which is responsible for supporting the legal needs of MassMutual’s insurance product development, insurance operations, and claims administration business units.

The Team

As part of MassMutual’s MMUS Product & Operations Law team, you will work with a dedicated and talented team of attorneys and legal specialists on a wide range of issues relating to the development, marketing, distribution and administration of MassMutual’s insurance products, including life insurance, annuities, disability income insurance, institutional insurance products and group insurance products.

The Impact:

In this role you will support attorneys with responsibilities to generally include, among other things, researching and analyzing relevant laws, regulations and case law affecting MassMutual’s products, responding to internal questions about MassMutual’s insurance products, including policyowner and beneficiary issues, and drafting legal and business communications.

Under limited guidance of an attorney, additional responsibilities and focus for this role will include, and are not limited to:

• Preparing and analyzing complex legal documents.
• Conducting complex legal research and analysis and advising attorneys on results.
• Assisting in the review of marketing/sales materials and internal operating procedures.
• Identifying legal issues that require attorney consideration and articulating such issues to attorneys.
• Researching and monitoring changes in federal and/or state insurance laws affecting MassMutual’s products; assessing potential implications for the business; summarizing and making recommendations.
• Reviewing and preparing regulatory filings, including policy form filings and variable product prospectuses.
• Interacting with all levels, including leaders, in the organization.

The Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to work easily in a team environment with colleagues and management.
• Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in law or a related field.
• Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
• 2+ years of experience within corporate law or a law firm.
• 2+ year(s) experience with a working knowledge of legal research tools.
• Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.
• Ability to work independently subject to attorney supervision.
• Strong research and writing skills
• Ability to be flexible, positive and client-focused.
• Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills and attention to detail.

The Ideal Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience working in Coporate Law or a Law Firm
• Juris Doctorate preferred or final year law student
• 4+ years legal research experience with a working knowledge of legal research tools.
