CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under the supervision of the Training Corporal, performs duties related to the training function of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. Work usually involves planning, coordinating, developing, record keeping, and conducting training of agency employees. The individual will perform other training administration, instructional work, and community programs as requested. Requires the ability to make sound independent work decisions based on experience and knowledge of agency procedures. Must be able to perform and demonstrate all training activities to include but not limited to: defensive tactics, tactical shooting, and vehicle operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Design, develop, implement and evaluate law enforcement training programs.
  • Work with local Criminal Justice Training Centers to develop training courses.
  • Be able to perform and demonstrate needed training activities. This includes but is not limited to defensive tactic moves, tactical shooting, evasive vehicle operations, and other courses as necessary.
  • Performs other training related duties as well as Community Outreach duties/functions on an as needed basis.
  • Be knowledgeable in public-related subjects, major revisions in law enforcement, and available training aids.
  • Establish training objectives each budget year, and develop and submit training budget proposals for the upcoming year.
  • Instruct in one or more technical or specialized fields of criminal justice.
  • Maintain accurate training records for the agency and notify personnel of required training as well as other training that may be available.
  • Prepare and submit training files for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
  • Develop lesson plans, curricula, handouts and other training materials.
  • Maintain all trainer rosters and files in a current state.
  • Be knowledgeable of the requirements of the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as they affect this agency.
  • Organize and schedule agency in-service training on an ongoing basis.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance, issuance and control of agency audiovisual aids/equipment assigned to the Community/Office of Professional Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess a valid Class E (Operator) driver license.
  • Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Currently possess, or the ability to attain, a “General” Instructor Certification and other approved instructor certification as defined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission; i.e., firearms, defensive driving, etc.
  • Previous experience as a law enforcement officer or academy instructor is highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of adult instructional course development.
  • Skill in presenting training courses to adult classes.
  • Knowledge of office practices.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of adult classroom presentation.
  • Skill in establishing training program objectives and designed training programs.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Knowledge of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission policies and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate between training program content and training objectives.
  • Ability to collect, organize and evaluate data and to develop logical conclusions.
  • Knowledge of computer applications and software.
  • Knowledge of the FTO Program and tracking systems.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in criminal justice.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to stand from a kneeling or prone position unassisted
  • Ability sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to carry moderate weight (i.e. boxes, shredded reports, file stacks, etc.)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Ability to perform and demonstrate all types of needed trainings to include role-playing for scenarios
  • Ability to walk unassisted
  • Ability to operate a computer effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to communicate orally
