Job Summary

The Barrett Summer Research Program is designed for continuing students and recent graduates who want to immerse themselves in an ongoing research project. It emphasizes laboratory discovery, communication of knowledge, and professional growth. Students are also instructed in laboratory safety.

Barrett Scholars participate in an ongoing research program with the support of an experienced scientific mentor, Professor Jared Young. Students learn the scientific process, technical methods and theoretical principles. Scholars have the chance to share their summer research projects with their peers and deepen their understanding of their projects. At the end of the summer, they create a poster and present a research talk in front of researchers, other students, former Barrett Scholars and parents.

Job Qualifications

Complete a Barrett application and submit a current transcript.

Have a good grasp of the basic laboratory skills taught in the Bio 1112 & 1114 sections.

Have a supporting recommendation from a MCNU Biology faculty member.

Have self-motivation and a high level of responsibility to complete tasks in a timely manner and make significant progress on a project.

Have the willingness and ability to learn new research techniques and new software as needed.

Have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

Work full-time in the lab between May 8 and July 23.

Assist in conducting research including data collection and compilation.

Perform research on c. Elegans (round worms), learning and using behavioral, anatomical, and genetic techniques under the close supervision of a professor mentor.

Attend a weekly meeting where the Barrett Scholars will present updates on their research.

Create a poster with other scholars and present a talk on your research at the annual Barrett Symposium in the fall.

The Barrett Program runs from May 6 to July 23 and students work 37.5 hours per week for 8 weeks within that time frame. Hourly wage is $16/hour. Housing in the Mills apartments is provided but no meal plan is provided as the students have kitchen facilities. This is a temporary, set-term research assistant position with no benefits.
