About the Lab Manager role:
You will hold an integral role within a new and growing lab – directing the day-to-day operations involved in running the lab and serving as both a collaborative partner to Dr. Vos and the primary liaison between the lab and various external partners (MIT administrative offices, HHMI science operations offices, etc.). The successful candidate will have a background in the health or life sciences and be committed to fostering a collaborative, thoughtful work environment. You will be supporting day-to-day activities in the research group including helping Dr. Vos with training personnel and maintaining equipment and supplies. There will also be opportunities to carry out independent research that supports the larger mission of the lab.
This position is expected to begin on/around September 1st, 2023 in concurrence with Dr. Vos’ upcoming appointment as a
Freeman Hrabowski Scholar

What we provide:
  • Opportunities to learn new skills in biochemistry and structural biology and to develop new approaches for the group.
  • The lab is steps away from Kendall Square and minutes from downtown Boston
  • Access to HHMI’s Udemy on-demand training courses and interactive skill-building seminars taught by members of our learning and organization development team.
  • Partnering with an investigator that has a deep and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and mentorship.
  • A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
  • With the lab being located in the main biology building at MIT, you will be able to join a vibrant scientific community including interactions with researchers at various levels (undergraduate students, PhD students, postdoctoral associates, visiting scientists, etc.) on a regular basis.
What you’ll do:
  • Develop laboratory guidelines, maintain procedure manuals, and evaluate new materials and/or equipment
  • Coordinate shipment of materials
  • Carry out research projects that support the overall aims of the lab (e.g., assist with molecular cloning, protein purification, etc.)
  • Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct.
  • Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including activities surrounding operation of essential equipment, ensuring that adequate supplies are available for routine experiments, reviewing budgets, etc.
  • Interact with MIT Environmental Health and Safety office to ensure lab follows appropriate safety rules
  • Act as a liaison between HHMI and MIT administrative offices on issues such as budget management, inventories, purchasing, and use of host accounts
What you bring:
  • Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, trustworthiness, and ability to work well in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize.
  • Passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to develop and train members of the research group.
  • A bachelor’s degree in health or life sciences is required.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a research laboratory with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Ability to operate complex laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques (cloning, protein purification, etc.) would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of computers and MS Office software.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
