JOB SUMMARY

This position learns how to interpret, analyze, recommend and implement management of network/telecom systems at an entry-level; interprets and analyzes network monitoring software and systems; implements and maintains network/telecom infrastructure, applications and computer systems, and performs basic troubleshooting and repair. The incumbent works within broad policy and organizational guidelines under the direction of the Network Administrator and alongside senior staff Network Analysts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:•Works alongside network staff for any assigned IT projects to learn network/telecom administration from conception and design, through startup, deployment, and provide long term maintenance support;

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Attends training, seminars and conferences as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills;
  • Learns to conduct installations, integrations, patches, and upgrades of network/telecom systems;
  • Learns to place and evaluate voice/data orders, coordinate and oversee voice/data installations and service turn-ups;
  • Maintain records of work completed and in-progress; and updates network documentation to record installations, upgrades, configurations,
  • Initiates recovery action following planned network maintenance and network system failures;
  • Assist with developing pricing schemes with vendors for network components, equipment, cabling, and wiring for new implementations or upgrades.
  • Programs voice mailboxes for individual users and department trees and troubleshoots voice mail issues and system failures;
  • Provides response to emergency work requests
  • Places telco orders for service add/moves/changes utilizing vendor work order system;
  • Responsible for installation, administration, and testing of operating system software, routers, switches, cabling etc.
  • Learns to perform basic network/telecom troubleshooting and provide hands-on assistance with service issues for all users;
  • Participate in the monthly on-call rotation to support the production environment 24/7/365;
  • Learns to terminate, test, and repair various forms of telecommunications and electrical wiring and cabling (e.g. copper, fiber, coax, etc.) to ensure proper connections between various pieces of electronic equipment;
  • Assists with the maintenance of network hardware and software - including servers, peripherals, network nodes, terminals, and wiring;
  • Manage the daily activities of local and wide area network systems, perform diagnostics, and schedule preventative maintenance;
  • Manage network management programs and prepare network status reports.
  • Collects network performance and stability data, analyzes it, and provides recommendations on how to ensure optimal performance.
  • Develops and documents functional and technical specifications based on business requirements;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • Associate’s degree in computer science, networking, computer maintenance or closely related field;
  • Two (2) years of relevant prior experience;
  • Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • CCNA preferred;
  • A+ / Network+;
  • Experience with Windows Office (full suite), network administration, switched networks, VLANs, routing, and firewall administration
  • Cisco Network Firewall Systems
  • Understanding and knowledge of network/telecom architectures, trouble ticket systems, facilities and equipment preferred;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to help develop new approaches or methodologies to solve problems not previously encountered by analyzing, synthesizing or evaluating data or information using unconventional or untried methods;
  • Knowledge of the English language;
  • Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
  • Ability to perform work involving the application of principles of logical thinking to diagnose or define problems, collect data and solve abstract problems with widespread unit or organizational impact. Intuitive computer and software troubleshooting skills are required to be efficient in this position;
  • Knowledge of algebra working with such factors as exponents, logarithms, linear and quadratic equations; concepts of analytic geometry, differentiation and integration of algebraic functions; statistics, applying such functions as frequency distribution, reliability, validity and correlation techniques; finance and economics using financial and econometric models;
  • Ability to read and write technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form;
  • Ability to counsel or instruct/train others outside IT through explanation, demonstration and supervised practice or making recommendations based on technical expertise under direct control;
  • Ability to operate or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as the design, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex hardware, software and network systems;
  • Ability to perform professional-level work requiring the application of principles and practices in a wide range of administrative, technical or managerial methods in the solution of administrative or technical problems; or the coordination of entry-level managerial work; requires general understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures; and
  • Ability to read journals, manuals and professional publications; speaking informally or formally to groups of co-workers, staff in other organizational agencies, the general public, people in other organizations; presenting training; composing original reports, training and other written materials using proper language, punctuation, grammar and style;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is considered sedentary in nature and involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, and occasionally more up to 50 pounds, and routine keyboard operations. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, crouching, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
