The United States District Court and United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals are now accepting applications for an Information Technology Technician II. POSITION OVERVIEW
This shared position is completely remote and reports directly to the Systems Supervisor – Desktop and Help Desk. The Information Technology Technician II performs remote help desk support for end users and provides technical support in installing and configuring computer hardware, desktop applications, and A/V support for all court units. The Information Technology Technician II also performs routine to moderately complex troubleshooting for hardware and software systems, installs critical patches, firmware updates, and reviews logs. This full-time remote position will require the following typical work hours: Monday-Friday (3 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.) and Saturday & Sunday (8 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.) with paid federal holidays off.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Respond to help desk tickets, phone calls, and e-mails, and log computer problems and resolution in a help desk ticketing system. When unable to resolve the concern, escalate the call as required.
  • Monitor day-to-day operations of equipment and systems. Administer Active Directory user accounts. Create and run reports. Confirm that backups are run. Monitor logs to comply with mandatory reviews. Document all findings to supervisors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain the operation of applications on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices (including but not limited to operating systems Windows Operating Systems, macOS, Apple iPhones, iPads, and Android OS mobile devices). These applications include Adobe Acrobat, Virtual Private Network and Remote Access Software, and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Set up, configure, and install software, critical patches, and firmware. Configure and provide remote assistance for hardware installation. Assist with the creation of new user accounts and user rights management. Provide end-user training. Perform administrative duties for Microsoft Outlook.
  • Assist with coordinating, establishing, and managing teleconferencing and videoconferencing utilizing applications such as Cisco Teleconferencing Management Service, WebEx, and Zoom.
  • Perform system support and administration for VOIP telephone systems, such as additions, deletions, moves, and maintenance of the call center users and groups.
  • Maintain contact with other information technology court personnel at different locations and levels for the purpose of keeping abreast of developments, techniques, and user programs.
  • Prepare and maintain IT-related training documentation for coworkers and staff.
  • Respond to after-hours and weekend security alerts.
  • Monitor employee access rights and databases to ensure accuracy.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

The incumbent must be able to troubleshoot and support software and hardware in a fully remote environment. Thorough knowledge of current IT hardware and related software is required. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), with an ability to listen and quickly discern customer needs and priorities. Candidates must also possess exceptional attention to detail, time-managements skills, and organizational skills. The successful candidate must be able to work well independently and in a team setting, display a professional and positive demeanor, and maintain an appearance appropriate for a court environment (business/office wear-professional). As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must successfully complete a background investigation with periodic updates every five years thereafter.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a computer-related certification is preferred. Other preferred qualifications include: experience working in the federal judiciary, experience with desktop support, experience working with a VOIP telephone system, and experience supporting teleconferencing and videoconferencing software and hardware.

Compensation

Compensation and classification level will be set based on the work experience, qualifications, and salary history of the successful candidate. To qualify at the CL 26, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to work at CL 25.

To qualify at a CL 27, applicants must have two years of specialized experience, including at least one year equivalent to work at the CL 25 or completion of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and if one of the following superior academic achievement requirements are met:
  • An overall “B” grade point average equaling 2.90 or better of a possible 4.0;
  • Standing in the upper third of the class;
  • “3.5” average or better in the major field of study, such as business or public administration, human resources management, industrial relations, or psychology;
  • Election to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma XI, or one of the National Honorary Scholastic Societies meeting the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies, other than Freshman Honor Societies;
  • Completion of one academic year (18 semester or 27 quarter hours) of graduate study in an accredited university in business or public administration, political science, criminal justice, law, or other field closely related to the subject matter of the position.

Specialized experience is:
Progressively responsible experience designing, implementing, or maintaining computer systems that included the completion of computer project assignments involving systems analysis, computer programming, systems integration, and information technology project management.
