The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. We are dedicated solely to the support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a wholly own a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
NNL is seeking an experienced Industrial Hygienist to join the Kesselring Site Safety and Health team!
The Safety and Health organization manages a comprehensive industrial hygiene program designed to reduce the risk of work-related disease or illness. The Industrial Hygienist performs surveys of work areas and operations to evaluate potential worker health risk and documents exposure assessments for chemical, physical, and biological agents and ergonomic stressors using recognized exposure assessment methodologies and use of accredited IH laboratories.
In addition, all Safety and Health personnel perform independent overviews and assessments of site work to ensure that operations are conducted safely, efficiently and in compliance with applicable requirements (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, and ANSI standards).
Functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Measure, audit, and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programs to ensure compliance with safety standards and requirements
- Collaborate with engineering and production organizations and provide subject matter expertise to determine hazard controls
- Identify and develop process improvements to ensure safe and efficient site operations, and involve personnel at all levels in developing the safety culture
- Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices
- Conduct inspections of site facilities and provide oversight of site operations, preventative and corrective maintenance tasks, building construction, renovation, and demolition
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Bachelor's degree in a technical, engineering or science-related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;
Master's degree in a degree in a technical, engineering or science-related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience
Preferred Skills
Knowledge of regulatory requirements in 29 CFR 1910 and/or 29 CFR 1926 (OSHA), as well as national safety consensus standards (ANSI, NFPA)
Experience with the selection and use of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment
Experience interacting with a diverse workforce including engineers, skilled tradespersons, scientists, and technicians
Ability to manage multiple short- and long-term work deliverables in a team environment
Strong analytical and technical writing skills
