Job Description

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a GIS Analyst (HR Title: Assistant Staff Geospatial Scientist) for our Pasadena office. This position will support both our Natural and Cultural Resource programs in Southern California but may collaborate and support other SWCA offices across the country. This position will be a team member of our centralized team of geospatial scientists supporting our Director of Practice Technologies. This position has the potential to be remote. This position will support the pacific time zone, those located in CA and westen half of the United States are encouraged to apply.

What You Will Accomplish


  • Help ensure quality of work is consistent with SWCA's standards and practices alongside other GIS team members
  • Provide QA/QC review of GIS calculations, navigation files, field maps, and report maps
  • Maintain a collaborative work environment between project managers and GIS staff
  • Support GIS workload with the team to ensure that productivity goals are met and that projects are delivered on time and on budget
  • Act as the main GIS point of contact for projects and coordinate directly with project managers and clients to meet project deadlines
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online or Portal hosted feature service application
  • Help design, create, maintain, and QA/QC geospatial databases using ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, and peripheral software
  • Help support GIS/cartographic capabilities by creating final map products supporting cultural, natural, paleontological, and other environmental resource projects using the Esri ArcGIS suite of software
  • Data management and support for handheld GNSS units using Field Maps for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS
  • Work with the GIS Team Lead to prepare maps and data dictionaries for field staff; post-process and manage field data; and create map products using established protocols and templates
  • Use Esri ArcGIS software, primarily ArcGIS Pro, for editing data, analyses, and cartography, including the use of geoprocessing tools, symbolizing features, importing/exporting a wide range of data and file types, and producing report quality and field maps in a reasonable amount of time


Experience And Qualifications For Success


  • Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS Pro 2.x or 3.x, as well as knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map creation procedures in ArcGIS required
  • Prior work in environmental consulting, with experience in the application of GIS to cultural or natural resources management and prior experience working with federal land agencies such as the USFS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USGS, or other, is very desirable
  • General understanding of basic statistics, and geometric math computations (e.g., summary, distributions, frequency, min/max, range, angles, distance, slope, degrees, area)
  • Ability to produce presentations, and/or written protocol of methods for reports or within metadata to replicate GIS-related analyses or modeling techniques applied on projects is strongly preferre d
  • Prior knowledge and experience creating database schemas, domains, ArcServer/web applications, network analysis, knowledge of Python, .NET, Java, PHP, HTML, is also a plus
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or a GIS certificate) OR two (2) years of experience with GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data management, and troubleshooting of equipment and digital files required
  • Completed all GIS-related aspects of a project, from pre-field preparations, to geospatial analyses, to final report maps and calculations preferred
  • Demonstrated ability of data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g. Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, Esri ArcGIS)

An employee in this Pasadena, CA-based position can expect a pay rate of: Assistant Staff Geospatial Scientist -$24.19/hour to $30.94/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
