Denver Animal Protection (DAP) protects the safety and welfare of Denver’s animals and residents by fostering the human animal bond. DAP emphasizes public and animal safety and health, encourages responsible pet ownership through education and enforcing compliance with animal-related municipal code requirements, and cares for animals at the Denver Animal Shelter (DAS). Denver Animal Protection has an opening for a Foster Program Coordinator. This position will spearhead development & management of our foster care program. This position is responsible for facilitating the placement of animals identified for foster care to include medical and/or behavioral rehabilitation and other special needs of the animal(s). The Foster Coordinator will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with foster volunteers. The Coordinator assists with planning, monitoring, and evaluating program metrics to provide the best possible care to the animals.
DAP is a 24/7 operation, and this position will be expected to work weekends, nights, holidays, and possibly irregular hours if needed.
Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develop, manage, implement & continuously assess/improve the foster care program.
  • Promotes a healthy volunteer program, through regular recognition efforts. Outings, cards, parties, appreciation week, communications, awards, etc.
  • Processes new foster applications in a timely manner, conduct monthly onboarding orientations for new foster volunteers. Schedules interviews and home checks.
  • Contributes content for the monthly volunteer newsletter on a regular basis.
  • Recruit, train, support, and supervise foster volunteers to provide care in their homes. Conduct annual home visits in accordance with PACFA regulations. Coordinate foster involvement in adoption and/or special events (at shelter & offsite).
  • Promotes and sustains open communication channels between volunteers, staff, and management.
  • Manages all aspects of program budget and grants. Manages assigned Pcard. Works directly with Client Services manager to identify budget needs.
  • Build and maintain appropriate retention levels based on shelters animal population needs.
  • Along with all department staff, this position will actively participate on an emergency preparedness and response team to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies. Additional training commensurate with assigned duties will be provided.
  • Facilitate the relationship of foster volunteers with DAS. This includes acting as point of contact for volunteers to resolve issues regarding the care of animals – in conjunction with veterinary and behavior staff - and providing general information.
  • Represent DAS to the public in a polished, inviting, energetic, passionate, and professional manner.
  • Coordinate scheduled vet treatments/appointments (vaccinating, spay/neuter, follow-up appointments, etc.) with veterinary team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Serves as a main point of contact for foster homes, engaging in timely and respectful communication.
  • Identifies and develops foster training materials and holds specific topic trainings to elevate the foster home’s ability to appropriately care for different types of animals in their homes.
  • Creates and maintains and adheres to all program SOP’s (standard operating procedures).
  • Maintain appropriate inventories of all foster supplies’ s, identifying, ordering, organizing, storing, and maintaining inventory records.
  • Works with Marketing and Communications to improve marketing efforts for foster animals through campaigns recruiting specialty foster homes, events, fundraising, fliers, program materials and creates social media content weekly.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records in designated software programs on each animal in foster and each foster volunteer. Reports out data and stats on a regular and immediate case by case need.
  • Regular communication with veterinary and behavior staff to facilitate the special needs of individual animals selected for potential foster care.
About You
Our ideal candidate will have:
  • 3 years or more of proven successful volunteer or program management experience.
  • Proficiency in Chameleon database software.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the public, volunteers and staff in a high volume, challenging environment.
  • Experience working with budget management, records, using data analytics to drive program innovation and sustainability.
  • Pet animal behavior and pet animal medicine experience a plus.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality when dealing with proprietary information and sensitive situations.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional experience conducting analysis and planning the administrative aspects of an environmental or public health program.
  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related field based on a specific position.
  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
