Job Description
Description

The Forestry and Open Space Supervisor plans, develops and directs the activities related to the City of Wheat Ridge's forestry and open space program, including activities with arboriculture, horticulture, interpretive programming, and natural resource management.

Please NOTE: while the entire pay range is listed as $69,280-$103,920/annually, the hiring salary range will be closer to $72,744-$86,600/annually depending on qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

Plan, develop, manage activities within City’s Open Space areas, including maintenance, forestry, horticulture natural resource management; provide training/guidance to others as needed.

Contribute to the effectiveness of team decision making and management by providing information, sharing resources, participating and adapting work schedules to accomplish goals and projects. Participate in development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

Coordinate the development of interpretive programs, brochure displays; develop opportunities for volunteers on the City’s Parks and Open Space areas, including special projects or events; work with community service groups.

Coordinate and give oversight to maintenance and trail improvements within the City’s Open Space areas.

Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; establish appropriate goals and expectations for subordinates; interview and select employees. Coordinate and arrange appropriate training of subordinates; insure that subordinates comply with applicable occupational health and safety standards and department regulations regarding conduct and appearance.

Implement Open Space management plans; prepare written materials for presentations and a variety of written reports; prepare budget for the Open Space Section; assist in long-term capital improvement plans and budget and replacement schedules; monitor budget and purchase supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.

Address inquiries concerning programs and activities; make presentations before civic and school groups and Boards and Commissions. Maintain open communication with other departments and agencies.

Review proposed ordinances, regulations, plans sketches, notes, blueprints and technical reports related to division and other departments activities for content accuracy, feasibility, and compliance with natural resource regulations; make recommendations for major trail improvements within the City’s Open Space areas; serve as a specialist and consultant in natural resource management, natural science and environmental education.

Administer construction or project contracts by monitoring and controlling expenditures, work quality, and schedules; maintain regular contact with consultants, contractors, and construction engineers, and governmental agencies.

Maintain detailed record system by collecting and assembling and analyzing data and preparing periodic reports.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general supervision of the Parks, Forestry, Open Space Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Responsible for overseeing the work of personnel assigned to area.

INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION:

Work is performed within authorized limits prescribed by the supervisor and/or policy. Exercises independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, handling deviations from standard methods and resolving problems. Finished work is reviewed for attainment of objectives and adherence to deadlines. Supervisor is available to assist in solving problems.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge - General ecological principles, Rocky Mountain plant materials and their appropriate use in landscaping, interpretive techniques and natural resource management including re-vegetation and restoration techniques and methods; noxious weed management; trail construction techniques and materials; project management; planning principles, practices and methods as applicable to a local government setting.

Skills – Use of computer and related software; use and operate a variety of hand tools and light to medium equipment; preparing written reports and projects; planning, organization and time management; excellent customer service skills.

Abilities - Give oversight to others in routine assignments; perform physical tasks required of the assignments; use computer and related software; prepare materials for presentations; follow verbal and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing; interact effectively with co-workers and the general public.

EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:

Training - Bachelors degree in forestry, biology, horticulture or natural resource management or related field preferred

Experience - Minimum of three (3) years experience in natural resource management or environmental education; minimum of two (2) year supervisory experience

or

Any equivalent combination of training/experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

EQUIPMENT USED : Must have the ability to properly operate or use the equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job such as: telephone, copier, radio, personal computer and use of all programs associated with said equipment. Dependent of area assigned, may operate a variety of equipment to facilitate maintenance of equipment, buildings, ditches, grates, and/or grounds. Said equipment may include, but may not be limited to: hand tools, power tools, light vehicles, chain saws, weed eater, shovel; drive light and medium duty trucks.

WORKING CONDITIONS


Work is both indoors in an office setting and outdoors in the field with other forestry and open space staff.

While in the field, work may occasionally:

  • Involve exposure to confined work areas and to chemicals, fumes, cold, heat, dirt, dust, noise, wetness, solvents, oils, gases, and occasionally to electrical energy, humidity, and pesticides;
  • Require the need to climb, bend, crouch, stoop, reach with both hands, carry, pull, push, or lift heavy objects;
  • Involve exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions;
  • Require intermittently sitting, standing and walking.
  • Be performed in cold, hot, or inclement weather;

Supplemental Information

Must possess a valid and current Colorado driver's license or ability to obtain within thirty (30) days from date of hire. A review of an applicant's motor vehicle record will be part of the background check.
