Job Description

Educational Programs and Services (EPS) is home to departments and programs that are central to the educational mission of the Stanford University School of Medicine. We serve all populations of students and trainees who participate in the School's programs: Stanford MD, MS, MSPA, and PhD students; visiting MD students seeking clinical clerkships; postdoctoral scholars and medical fellows; and medical practitioners seeking further professional enrichment. Our goal is to provide a Stanford School of Medicine experience worthy of our students' and trainees' talents, aspirations, and dedication.


Job Purpose


The Department of Educational Programs and Services (EPS) is looking for a self-starter to join its dynamic, collaborative Finance Team. In this role, you will be working with faculty and staff that are recognized for their brilliance in medical research, teaching, and clinical innovation. We are seeking candidates who value teamwork and diversity and a focus on excellence. The Financial Analyst (FA) for EPS reports to the Director of Finance and s/he will manage all finance, procurement, and accounting activities for several units within EPS. This includes reconciling monthly expenditure statements, preparing monthly projections, and processing payments (e.g., purchasing cards, reimbursements, invoices). The FA also serves as a liaison between Principal Investigators (PIs) and the Research Management Group (RMG) and Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) by managing the internal pre-award process (including budget development and proposal submission) and post-award sponsored funding.



This position is eligible for full-time remote work from within the United States with periodic visits to campus, subject to operational needs. In addition, a shared touchdown workspace is available for staff who wish to work onsite occasionally.


Core Duties


  • Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and implement approved changes. May manage compliance program for area of responsibility, and create complex compliance reports.
  • Develop reports and presentations of complex financial data and metrics for management and third parties.
  • Define requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, perform system testing and analyze results.
  • Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
  • Conduct analysis and resolution, and recognize exceptions. Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making.
  • Perform and design ad hoc analyses of large complex data sets: reconcile complex accounts. Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas.
  • Provide consulting advice to client group(s); serve as a resource on matters that require specific technical, financial, or subject matter expertise.
  • Contribute to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans and materials as needed.
  • Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.
  • Construct and assemble data for budgeting and decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations. May develop annual budget for individual department/unit.
  • Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and identify opportunities for process improvement.


Education & Experience (Required)



Bachelor’s degree and four years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (Required)


  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team.
  • Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
  • Knowledge of GAAP.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.


Desired Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration or related field and five years of progressive professional work experience in a financial field, including financial projections and analysis, preparation and distribution of financial reports, budget preparation and implementation.
  • Experience using Stanford accounting systems, including Oracle, is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a constantly changing environment.


Physical Requirements


  • Rarely reach/work above shoulder.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
  • Constantly sitting.


Working Conditions


  • Routine extended working hours during peak cycles; travel to school/unit sites across university.

The expected pay range for this position is $84,000 to $115,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
