Executive Director of International Partnerships and Programs, University of Vermont
Position Description
We seek a dynamic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial leader to serve as Executive Director of International Partnerships and Programs at the University of Vermont. Reporting directly to the University President, the Executive Director plays a pivotal role in advancing the global orientation of the University as well as advancing the academic excellence of international scholarly and educational initiatives. The Executive Director is responsible for defining the University’s strategic priorities in global engagement, in collaboration with university leadership, and securing resources to deliver on these priorities. In consultation with units across campus, the Executive Director oversees the development of processes, programming, and organizational structures that advance UVM’s global mission. The Executive Director serves as UVM’s Senior International Officer (SIO).
The Executive Director is responsible for building international educational, scholarly and research collaborations by strategically developing targets of opportunity. The Executive Director will take the lead in developing and maintaining institutional relationships with core strategic partners around the world, in collaboration with the Provost’s Office and the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). Working with universities, research institutes, multinational corporations, and governmental and non-governmental organizations globally, the Executive Director facilitates collaborative, focused, and high-impact student programming, international research and engagement collaborations, and scholarship that leverages and enhances the intellectual richness of UVM and capitalizes on our physical assets and location. To this end, the Executive Director must have the ability to work across disciplinary and college boundaries as well as to successfully network with alumni and the broader community to raise funds supporting education abroad and other international partnerships.
The University of Vermont is dedicated to advancing international education opportunities for all UVM students and to enhancing the experience of international students attending the University. The Executive Director will oversee the Office of International Education (OIE), which provides international student and scholar services and manages UVM’s Education Abroad and Travel Study portfolio. OIE plays a crucial role in enhancing the diversity of experiences and perspectives of the campus community by attracting, supporting, and retaining outstanding international students, scholars, and faculty. As a member of the University’s leadership team, the Executive Director provides strategic leadership that enhances global opportunities for UVM’s undergraduate and graduate students through research, internships, and education abroad. Working with the Provost’s Office, the Executive Director promotes intercultural and cross-cultural competency by encouraging best practices, developing global learning outcomes, and advocating for inclusion of global topics and perspectives in the curriculum as part of the recently launched Catamount Global initiative.

  • Demonstrated experience building and supporting international initiatives and sustained international research and engagement collaborations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to shared governance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and global understanding.
  • Required: Master’s degree in a relevant field, plus 6-8 years of experience in academic or global research settings, with at least two years of executive leadership experience. Doctoral degree in relevant field preferred.

About UVM
Chartered in 1791 as the fifth college in New England, the University of Vermont rapidly claimed a respected place among progressive thinkers and doers in the rugged, vibrant, and spectacular place that became the State of Vermont that same year. The university has evolved significantly and continuously for over 230 years to become a premier public research university.
In harmony with our early roots as a champion of the liberal arts, the institution is chartered with a Latin name, Universitas Viridis Montis (University of the Green Mountains) abbreviated to the familiar “UVM” used to this day. Anchored in scholarly tradition yet helping to define a new state’s and nation’s future, UVM established a reputation like no other from the beginning.
Following the passage of the Morrill Land Grant Act, the UVM merged with Vermont’s State Agricultural College in 1865, producing a comprehensive public mission that combined the rigorous scholarship of the liberal arts, the engagement ideals of the Land Grant Act, and the curiosity and innovation of a research university. These influences have formed a unique blend of academic gravitas and practical outcomes. Throughout our history, UVM has maintained enrollment at a scale that fosters meaningful personal engagement and a robust feeling of community on a vibrant campus in an exceptional location.
Currently ranked 56 among the nation’s public land grant research universities, UVM enrolled 11,326 undergraduates, 483 medical students, and 1,707 graduate students in 2022. With seven undergraduate colleges and schools and five additional major academic divisions, UVM is guided by its strategic vision – Amplifying Our Impact – and our Academic Success Goals. UVM’s ideals of accessibility, inclusiveness, and academic excellence are reflected in Our Common Ground values—respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice, and responsibility.
Diversity and inclusion are deeply held values at the University of Vermont as we prepare our students for a global world. We aspire to build a diverse and globally aware university community sustained by an inclusive, supportive, and just campus climate. Diversity and inclusive excellence are integral to all aspects of our university, as we embark on our first data-based DEI strategic action plans across our academic and administrative units. We have increased the number of BIPOC faculty and staff (including administration and management) over the past five years by 15.3% and our students participate in a two-course general education requirement in diversity.
About the Area
The University of Vermont (UVM) is a vital resource for the community and region, contributing more than $1.3 billion in economic activity enhancing quality of life and sparking innovations and collaborations beyond campus.
Located in the historic city of Burlington and adjacent to South Burlington, each of which was recently named among WalletHub’s top 10 “Happiest Cities in America,” the area provides a rare combination of historic charm and modern convenience. UVM is nestled between the Adirondack and Green Mountains and near the beautiful and vast Lake Champlain, which affords our campus community with unparalleled access to breathtaking beauty and outdoor adventures all year long.
